Chapter 11 - What Henry Knew

Samuel eventually gave me a letter Henry had written before his death.

I waited three days before opening it.

Henry wrote about Marcus.

About his fear that our son had begun confusing wealth with worth.

About Lily.

About how proud he was of the woman she'd become.

And about me.

One sentence broke me.

Ellie, your greatest weakness has always been that you think loving someone means standing between them and every consequence.

I cried for an hour.

Henry knew me.

Even the parts I didn't understand myself.

He explained why he had created the trust.

It wasn't punishment.

It was a boundary he feared I would never create.

At the end, he wrote:

If Marcus becomes the man I know he can be, he won't need the money to prove it.

I showed the letter to Marcus.

He read it silently.

Then he covered his face.

“I thought Dad was disappointed in me.”

“He was worried about you.”

“That's worse.”

“No,” I said. “It means he still believed you could change.”

Marcus asked to keep a copy.

I made one.

The original stayed with me.
