Chapter 9 - Four Million Dollars

Marcus didn't receive the news from me.

He received it from attorneys.

His seventy-percent inheritance had been forfeited.

Under Henry's trust terms, the forfeited share did not automatically pass to Lily.

Instead, it entered a discretionary family fund controlled by me.

That meant I could distribute it.

Donate it.

Preserve it.

Or leave it untouched.

Marcus came to see me.

This time he knocked once.

Then waited.

When I opened the door, he looked smaller somehow.

“Did Dad hate me?”

“No.”

“Then why would he write that clause?”

“Because loving somebody doesn't mean giving them permission to hurt people.”

Marcus cried.

He told me he'd lost the lake house.

His company was collapsing.

Vanessa had filed for divorce.

His friends had stopped returning calls.

Everything he had used to measure success was disappearing.

I listened.

Then he asked whether I would restore his inheritance.

I said no.

His face fell.

“Never?”

“I didn't say never.”

He looked up.

“You don't need millions right now, Marcus.”

“What do I need?”

“A life you don't have to fake.”

That became the beginning of something neither of us expected.

Not forgiveness.

Not yet.

Accountability.

Marcus sold his luxury car.

Moved into a small apartment.

Started cooperating with investigators.

And for the first time since college, got a regular salaried job.

Vanessa mocked him when she heard.

Then her own financial accounts were frozen.

Suddenly, nobody was laughing.
