Chapter 12 - Lily's Dream

After the legal storm settled, I discovered Lily had been hiding something too.

Not a betrayal.

A dream.

She wanted to open a small community clinic for seniors who delayed medical treatment because they couldn't afford deductibles and uncovered procedures.

She had been planning it for years.

She never mentioned it because she didn't have the money.

I asked how much she needed.

She laughed.

“Mom, absolutely not.”

“That's not a number.”

“I'm not taking Dad's money.”

“Why?”

“Because that's yours.”

“No. It's a tool.”

We argued for two weeks.

Eventually, I proposed something different.

The Henry Bennett Vision and Care Fund.

Not Lily's personal money.

A charitable fund.

Seeded with part of the trust.

Designed to help people facing the same impossible choices I had faced.

Medication or groceries.

Rent or surgery.

Sight or debt.

Lily cried when she saw the proposed name.

“You think Dad would like this?”

“I think he'd complain we spent too much on the sign.”

May you like

She laughed through her tears.

Then we did it.
