Chapter 9 - THE WOMAN WHO CAME FOR BRENDAN

Three weeks later, a woman arrived at my office.

Her name was Margaret Ellis.

She had worked for Fairchild Holdings for eighteen years.

She brought another box.

“I should have spoken sooner.”

Inside were hundreds of pages.

Margaret had discovered that Fairchild executives had systematically manipulated medical expense classifications for employees and dependents.

Chloe wasn't the only child.

There were seven others.

Some families had been forced to sell their homes.

One child had died.

I stared at Margaret.

“Why didn't you go to the police?”

“Because Eleanor threatened my son.”

My blood ran cold.

“What did she threaten?”

“His college fund.”

That was when I understood the real structure of the Fairchild family.

Money wasn't their wealth.

Fear was.

And now I was going to take both away.

We filed a civil action representing the affected families.

The case exploded.

News outlets began covering the Fairchild scandal.

Brendan became a national headline.

And then Samantha disappeared.

Her phone was turned off.

Her apartment was empty.

Her car was abandoned.

I knew immediately.

Brendan had found her.
