Chapter 4 - THE FILE WITH CHLOE'S NAME

Raymond took me to his office that afternoon.

A single box waited on his desk.

My name was written across the top.

Underneath it was another name.

CHLOE FAIRCHILD.

I froze.

“What is that?”

“Your father prepared it.”

My hands trembled as I opened the box.

Inside were copies of financial records, emails, contracts, medical correspondence, and photographs.

Then I saw something that made my stomach drop.

A letter from Ximena.

It was dated six months earlier.

She had written to Brendan:

If Nora's access to unrestricted funds continues, she'll never understand that the Fairchild family decides what happens inside this marriage.

Below it, Brendan had replied:

Keep the limits in place. She needs to learn.

I couldn't breathe.

Raymond handed me another page.

It was an internal Fairchild Holdings report.

Someone had classified Chloe's medical expenses as a “nonessential dependent liability.”

The report had been approved by Brendan's CFO.

I looked at Raymond.

“Why did my father know?”

“Because he had people monitoring the Fairchild organization long before your marriage.”

“Why didn't he tell me?”

“He wanted you to choose freely.”

I cried silently.

My father had given me freedom.

And I had mistaken submission for love.

Then Raymond placed the final document in front of me.

A hospital billing record.

There was a handwritten note attached.

Payment delayed by executive authorization.

The signature belonged to Brendan.

I stared at it.

“He signed this?”

“Yes.”

“Then he knew.”

Raymond nodded.

“He knew your daughter needed treatment.”

The grief inside me changed.

It became something colder.

Not hatred.

Purpose.

That evening, Brendan called.

“You need to come home.”

“I am home.”

“This is your last warning.”

I looked at Chloe's urn.

“No, Brendan.”

May you like

My voice was calm.

“It's yours.”
