Chapter 7 - THE RECORDING

That night, Raymond called me.
“We found something.”
He played an audio recording.
Brendan's voice filled the room.
“Delay the medication approval.”
Ximena answered.
“What if the child gets worse?”
A pause.
“Then Nora will finally understand that she doesn't control the money.”
My hands went numb.
Then another voice appeared.
Eleanor.
“You cannot let her inherit the trust if she leaves.”
Brendan replied:
“She won't leave.”
Eleanor laughed.
“She has nowhere to go.”
I closed my eyes.
They had been certain of my helplessness.
Then came the final sentence.
“If Chloe dies,” Eleanor said, “Nora becomes easier to manage.”
I stopped the recording.
“That's enough.”
Raymond nodded.
“It's admissible if authenticated.”
“Then authenticate it.”
The next morning, federal investigators entered Fairchild Holdings.
Brendan called me from his office.
“You think this ends with me?”
“No.”
“You'll regret this.”
I looked at the phone.
“I already regret something.”
“What?”
May you like
“Trusting you.”
Then I hung up.
