Chapter 11 - MY MOTHER'S FILE

The file was hidden in a private vault.

Inside was a photograph of my mother standing beside a man I had never seen.

Behind the photograph was one sentence:

He was responsible for the accident.

I stared at Raymond.

“Who is he?”

“Victor Hale.”

The name meant nothing.

Until Raymond opened another document.

Victor Hale had once been a business partner of my father.

He had later disappeared.

And years before my mother's death, he had accused my father of stealing millions.

My father denied it.

The case vanished.

But the money didn't.

It had been transferred into several trusts.

One of those trusts was now mine.

I realized something terrifying.

Brendan's family hadn't married me by accident.

They had known about my inheritance.

They had spent years trying to locate the hidden assets.

My father hadn't merely protected me from an abusive husband.

He had protected me from people hunting his fortune.

Then Raymond found something else.

A recent bank transfer.

Money had moved from a Fairchild account to Victor Hale's organization.

The date was three days before Chloe died.

Brendan had been paying someone.

I looked at Raymond.

“Find Victor.”

“We already did.”

My heart pounded.

“Where?”

May you like

Raymond looked at me.

“Chicago.”
