Chapter 6 - THE BOARDROOM

Two days later, I walked into Fairchild Holdings.
The receptionist didn't recognize me.
That was almost funny.
For three years, I had been treated like an unwanted wife.
Now I entered the building with Raymond, three attorneys, and two forensic accountants.
The boardroom went silent.
Brendan stood at the head of the table.
“You can't be here.”
I placed a folder in front of him.
“I own enough voting interests to request this meeting.”
Several directors exchanged nervous glances.
Eleanor stood.
“This is absurd.”
“No,” I said. “What's absurd is that you believed my father's daughter could be financially erased by changing a password.”
The CFO looked terrified.
Raymond began presenting documents.
Improper transfers.
Hidden accounts.
Executive bonuses.
Payments to shell companies.
And finally, the medical expense restrictions.
The room became silent.
One director asked Brendan:
“Did you personally approve the restriction on Chloe Fairchild's emergency medication?”
Brendan didn't answer.
The director asked again.
Brendan finally whispered:
“Yes.”
The room exploded.
I didn't smile.
I couldn't.
Because there was nothing satisfying about proving that my daughter had been failed.
The board voted to suspend Brendan's executive authority pending investigation.
He stared at me.
“You're destroying my family.”
I shook my head.
“No.”

I picked up Chloe's photograph.
“You did that yourself.”
