Chapter 4 - CHARLES HARRISON'S LIE

Nathan drove straight to his father's mansion.
Charles was sitting in the library.
He didn't look surprised.
“You found the photograph.”
Nathan slammed it onto the desk.
“What did you do?”
Charles calmly poured himself a drink.
“I protected this family.”
“You knew Emma was pregnant.”
“Yes.”
“You knew about the twins.”
“Yes.”
Nathan's fists tightened.
“You let me believe they weren't mine.”
Charles sighed.
“You were young.”
“I was thirty.”
“You were reckless.”
“You destroyed my marriage.”
“I saved your future.”
Nathan laughed bitterly.
“My future?”
“You were about to inherit everything.”
“I already had everything.”
“No.”
Charles looked directly at him.
“You had Emma.”
Nathan went silent.
Charles continued.
“She was the problem.”
“Why?”
“Because she knew too much.”
Nathan stared.
“About what?”
Charles opened a drawer.
He pulled out a file.
Inside were financial records.
Nathan recognized the company names.
Construction firms.
Political donations.
Shell corporations.
His father's empire wasn't as clean as Nathan had believed.
“What is this?”
“Business.”
“This is money laundering.”
Charles smiled.
“You finally understand.”
Nathan stepped back.
“How many people know?”
“Enough to make you dangerous.”
“Why were the boys involved?”
Charles's expression changed.
“They weren't supposed to be.”
Nathan stared.
“What does that mean?”
Charles stood.
“Your mother discovered something.”
Nathan's face hardened.
“My mother died when I was eighteen.”
“Yes.”
“She died of cancer.”
Charles said nothing.
Nathan understood.
“You're lying.”
Charles looked away.
“Your mother found evidence against me.”
“And?”
“She threatened to expose me.”
Nathan's voice trembled.
“What happened to her?”
Charles stared at the fireplace.
“I didn't kill her.”
“That wasn't my question.”
Charles finally looked at him.
“People around me handled the problem.”
Nathan felt sick.
He stepped backward.
“You're a monster.”
Charles laughed softly.
“Careful.”
“Where is the second birth certificate?”
Charles's expression changed.
“I destroyed it.”
“Why?”
“Because one child wasn't supposed to exist.”
Nathan's heart hammered.
“Which child?”
Charles didn't answer.
Nathan grabbed his father's collar.
“WHICH ONE?”
Charles smiled.
“You'll have to figure that out yourself.”
Nathan released him.
Then his phone rang.
Emma.
He answered.
“Nathan?”
Her voice was trembling.
“Come home.”
“What happened?”
“I found something.”
“What?”
“A letter.”
“From who?”
“Your mother.”
Nathan stopped breathing.
“Where?”
“It was hidden inside the boys' old medical file.”
Nathan grabbed his keys.
“Don't touch anything.”
“Nathan…”
“What?”
Emma whispered,
“It says she knew about the twins before they were born.”
Nathan froze.
“That can't be possible.”
“She wrote your name.”
Then Emma said something that made Nathan's blood run cold.
“She wrote that one of the boys was carrying evidence that could destroy Charles Harrison.”
Nathan stared at the road ahead.
Suddenly, the twins weren't simply his sons.

They were connected to the darkest secret in his family.
And someone had spent four years trying to find them.
