Chapter 8 - THE NIGHT EMMA LEFT

Nathan confronted Emma that night.

“What happened before our divorce?”

Emma looked away.

“You already know.”

“No.”

“You remember.”

“I remember fighting.”

“Exactly.”

Nathan shook his head.

“I remember you accusing me of choosing work over you.”

“You did.”

“I remember you saying I never listened.”

“You didn't.”

“I remember the night you left.”

Emma's eyes filled with tears.

“You don't remember what happened before.”

Nathan waited.

Emma sat down.

“The night before I left, I discovered I was pregnant.”

Nathan stared.

“You never told me.”

“I tried.”

“What happened?”

“I went to your office.”

Nathan frowned.

“I don't remember.”

“You weren't there.”

“Where was I?”

“Your father told me you were in London.”

Nathan's face changed.

“I wasn't.”

Emma nodded.

“You were in Chicago.”

She continued.

“I went to your father's house.”

“Why?”

“To ask him where you were.”

Nathan stared.

“What did he say?”

“He told me you didn't want me anymore.”

Nathan's jaw tightened.

“He showed me divorce papers.”

“What?”

“They weren't signed.”

Nathan's eyes widened.

“Forged?”

“Yes.”

Emma began crying.

“I believed you had abandoned me.”

Nathan sat beside her.

“And then?”

“I found out I was having twins.”

She wiped her eyes.

“I called you again.”

“You never reached me.”

“No.”

Nathan closed his eyes.

His father had controlled everything.

But then Emma said something else.

“There was another reason I didn't tell you.”

Nathan looked at her.

“What?”

“I was afraid.”

“Of my father?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Emma hesitated.

“Because he threatened the babies.”

Nathan's face went cold.

“What exactly did he say?”

Emma whispered,

“He said if I told you about the twins, one of them would disappear.”

Silence.

Nathan looked toward the boys.

Then he noticed Noah standing in the doorway.

The child was holding something.

A small metal key.

Nathan stared.

“Where did you get that?”

Noah smiled.

“Under Mommy's bed.”

Emma froze.

Nathan took it.

It matched the key Marcus had given him.

Two keys.

One lock.

Nathan looked at Emma.

“We need to go to Harrison Tower.”

Emma nodded.

They left immediately.

Beneath the old tower was an abandoned maintenance room.

The two keys opened a metal cabinet.

Inside was a box.

Nathan opened it.

Documents.

Photographs.

A hard drive.

And one envelope addressed to Emma.

She opened it.

Her face collapsed.

“What?”

She handed Nathan the letter.

It contained a confession from Charles.

He admitted manipulating their divorce.

But there was one final paragraph.

Nathan read it aloud.

“Emma, if Nathan ever discovers the boys, tell him this: I did not order the hospital incident.”

Nathan stopped.

“Then who did?”

Emma looked at the final line.

Her hands trembled.

The answer was a name neither of them expected.

DANIEL REEVES.

Emma's former doctor.

The man Nathan had once believed was her lover.
