Chapter 1 - THE DOOR HE WASN’T READY TO OPEN

Nathan stood outside Emma Parker’s apartment for nearly a full minute before knocking.

He had walked into rooms filled with presidents, billionaires, investors, and men who could destroy companies with one phone call.

None of them had ever made his hand hesitate.

But Emma did.

He finally knocked.

The door opened almost immediately.

Emma stood there wearing an old gray sweatshirt and black leggings. Her hair was tied loosely behind her head. She looked tired.

But her eyes were exactly as he remembered.

Sharp.

Guarded.

Unforgiving.

Nathan swallowed.

“Can I come in?”

Emma stepped aside.

He entered.

The apartment was small.

Much smaller than the homes they had once shared.

There was a worn sofa against one wall, a secondhand dining table near the kitchen, and children's drawings taped everywhere.

Rocket ships.

Planets.

Dinosaurs.

Two identical names appeared repeatedly.

ETHAN.

NOAH.

Nathan stopped breathing for a second.

His sons.

His sons.

The thought still felt impossible.

He had spent years believing his marriage to Emma had ended cleanly.

They had fought.

They had blamed each other.

They had signed papers.

Then Emma disappeared.

Or so he had believed.

He looked toward the hallway.

“Are they asleep?”

“Yes.”

“How old are they?”

Emma stared at him.

“You already know.”

Nathan lowered his eyes.

“Four.”

“Four years, three months, and eleven days.”

He looked up.

She continued.

“You didn't know that either.”

“No.”

“You didn't know they were born three months early.”

Nathan's jaw tightened.

“I read the report.”

“Reports aren't children, Nathan.”

Her voice cracked slightly.

“They don't tell you what it feels like to sit beside an incubator every night wondering if your child will breathe until morning.”

Nathan said nothing.

Emma folded her arms.

“You want to know what you did?”

“Yes.”

“You left.”

“I thought—”

“You thought I was cheating.”

Nathan froze.

Emma laughed bitterly.

“You didn't even ask me.”

“I saw the photographs.”

“You saw photographs of me leaving a hospital.”

Nathan's expression changed.

“What?”

Emma walked toward the kitchen.

“Your father hired someone to follow me.”

Nathan's face went pale.

“My father?”

“Charles Harrison.”

The name hung between them.

“My father told you I was having an affair.”

“He showed me photographs.”

“Photographs of me meeting Dr. Daniel Reeves.”

Nathan remembered the man.

The hospital doctor.

Emma's obstetrician.

“He told you Daniel was my lover.”

Nathan stared at her.

“He wasn't.”

“I know that now.”

Emma turned.

“No, Nathan. You don't.”

She reached into a drawer.

Then she pulled out an old envelope.

She threw it onto the table.

Nathan opened it.

Inside were copies of medical documents.

Hospital records.

Bank statements.

And one handwritten letter.

His father's signature appeared at the bottom.

Nathan read it once.

Then again.

His hands began shaking.

The letter instructed someone to make sure Emma believed Nathan had permanently abandoned her.

Nathan looked up.

“Why?”

Emma's eyes filled with tears.

“Because your father wanted you to marry someone else.”

Nathan stared at her.

“That doesn't make sense.”

“It will.”

She pulled out another document.

This one made Nathan's stomach twist.

It was a DNA test.

His name was listed as the biological father.

The twins' names were underneath.

Ethan Parker.

Noah Parker.

Nathan couldn't breathe.

“You knew?”

Emma nodded.

“I knew they were yours from the beginning.”

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because I tried.”

Nathan looked at her.

“What?”

“I called you.”

“I never got a call.”

“I left twelve voicemails.”

Nathan shook his head.

“My phone—”

“Your father had your number changed.”

Nathan closed his eyes.

For years, he had blamed Emma.

For years, he had believed she had chosen to disappear.

And all this time...

Someone had built a wall between them.

A wall made from lies.

Then a sound came from the hallway.

Tiny footsteps.

Nathan turned.

A little boy stood there rubbing his eyes.

He had dark brown hair.

Brown eyes.

And Nathan's exact expression when confused.

The boy stared at him.

“Mom?”

Emma quickly moved between them.

“Go back to bed, sweetheart.”

The boy didn't move.

He looked at Nathan.

“Who is he?”

Nathan's heart nearly broke.

Emma whispered,

“Someone from Mommy's past.”

The boy frowned.

Then his twin appeared behind him.

Noah.

The second child looked at Nathan.

And Nathan saw himself.

Not vaguely.

Not slightly.

Himself.

Four years old.

Standing in a hallway.

Looking at a stranger who was actually his father.

Nathan's knees almost gave way.

Then Ethan asked the question that would change everything.

“Are you the man in Mommy's old pictures?”

Emma closed her eyes.

Nathan looked at her.

“You kept pictures?”

She didn't answer.

Ethan smiled.

“I like that one.”

He pointed toward a photograph sitting on a shelf.

Nathan and Emma on their wedding day.

Young.

Happy.

Still believing nothing could tear them apart.

Nathan stared at the photograph.

Then at the boys.

Then at Emma.

And suddenly he understood.

The five million dollars.

The secret donation.

The school.

None of it was enough.

He couldn't fix four years with money.

He couldn't buy back birthdays.

Christmas mornings.

First words.

First steps.

He couldn't buy back being their father.

Nathan looked at Emma.

“What do you want me to do?”

Emma's expression hardened.

“Nothing.”

He blinked.

“Nothing?”

“I spent four years raising them without you.”

She pointed toward the hallway.

“You don't get to walk in here because you finally discovered they exist and decide what happens next.”

Nathan nodded slowly.

“You're right.”

Emma seemed surprised.

“I don't expect forgiveness.”

“Good.”

“I don't expect you to trust me.”

“Good.”

“But I'm not walking away again.”

Emma's eyes narrowed.

“Nathan—”

“I walked away once because I believed a lie.”

He looked toward the boys.

“I won't do it twice.”

Emma's face changed.

Before she could answer, Nathan's phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

His father's private number.

Nathan answered.

“Dad?”

Charles Harrison spoke calmly.

“You went to see Emma.”

Nathan's blood ran cold.

“How do you know?”

A pause.

Then Charles said,

“Because I know everything.”

Nathan stood perfectly still.

Charles continued.

“And if you care about those boys, you'll stay away from them.”

Nathan's voice dropped.

“Why?”

Another pause.

“Because they're not the only secret Emma has been keeping.”

The call ended.

Nathan stared at the phone.

Emma saw his face.

“What did he say?”

Nathan looked at her.

“My father knows about the boys.”

Emma went completely still.

Then her expression changed to fear.

Real fear.

And Nathan realized something terrifying.

May you like

She wasn't afraid of Charles discovering the twins.

She was afraid of what Charles might reveal next.
