Chapter 5 - The Snake in the Grass

When they returned to the safe house—a fortified estate on the outskirts of the city—Vincent called his longtime legal counsel, Anthony Rossi. Anthony was a brilliant, silver-haired attorney who had kept the Caruso family out of prison for thirty years.
They sat in the study, the pink backpack open on the desk, its contents spread beneath a green shaded lamp.
"This is radioactive, Vincent," Anthony said, his hands trembling slightly as he reviewed the bank wire transcripts. "This isn't just local bribery. Horizon Development is a front for a multinational cartel laundering billions through municipal infrastructure bonds. And look at this signature on the distribution authorization."
Vincent leaned over the desk. His blood turned to ice.
The signature belonged to Frank Caruso—Vincent's own older brother, who managed the family's shipping docks on the south side.
"Frank," Vincent whispered, a deep, agonizing betrayal ripping through his soul. "He sold us out. He let them use our docks to bring in the contraband and the chemicals that killed Maria Martinez."
"Vincent, if you use this evidence to expose Horizon, your brother goes down with them," Anthony said quietly. "The Caruso family name will be dragged through the mud. Everything you built, your entire empire, will be dismantled by the federal government."

Vincent walked to the window, looking out at the dawn breaking over the foggy fields. He thought about his empire—the money, the power, the fear he had spent a lifetime cultivating. Then he thought about Sophia, sleeping upstairs with her one-eared teddy bear, believing that the man with the "kind eyes" would protect her.
"My brother helped murder a mother in front of her child, Anthony," Vincent said, his voice flat, devoid of emotion. "My empire was built on sand. Let it burn."
