Chapter 1 - The Sanctuary Within the Red Door

The click of the heavy iron deadbolts sliding into place at Romano’s sounded like a gavel striking a death sentence. The rain continued to batter the glass, casting distorted, weeping shadows across the polished mahogany tables. Inside, the air was thick with the scent of garlic, expensive cigar smoke, and the heavy, metallic tang of impending violence.
The blond stranger, whose tailored charcoal coat now seemed like a shroud, didn't move. His two associates instinctively reached toward their jackets, their eyes darting around the room, mapping the exits. They were professionals, but they were hopelessly outnumbered. Twelve of Vincent Caruso’s loyal soldiers stood in a semi-circle, their weapons drawn, their faces unreadable masks of stone.
"You’re a practical man, Caruso," the blond man said, his voice dropping its smooth veneer, replaced by a cold, transactional hardness. "Let’s not let a moment of misplaced sentimentality ruin a highly profitable arrangement. The girl is a liability. The contents of that backpack belong to the syndicate. Give us the bag, give us the child, and we will ensure the Caruso family receives a twenty-percent discount on all port-of-entry tariffs for the next fiscal year."
Vincent didn't answer immediately. He reached down, his large, scarred hand gently detaching Sophia’s tiny fingers from his jacket sleeve. He knelt before her, completely ignoring the three armed men standing less than twenty feet away.
"Marco," Vincent called out, his voice a low, commanding rumble.
"Yeah, Boss?"
"Take Sophia to the kitchen. Tell Luisa to make her some hot chocolate and find her some dry clothes. Put a guard at the back exit."
Sophia looked at Vincent, her wide, tear-filled eyes searching his face. "Are you going to leave me?" she whispered, her bottom lip trembling.
Vincent looked at the silver scar that ran across his knuckle—a reminder of a life spent in the dark. For the first time in twenty years, he felt a strange, clean warmth blooming behind his ribs. "No, Sophia. I don't leave people who find the red door. Go with Marco."
The little girl nodded bravely, letting Marco guide her through the swinging double doors into the kitchen, clutching her pink backpack tightly against her small chest.
The moment the doors clicked shut, Vincent stood back up to his full six-foot-four height. The warmth in his eyes vanished, replaced by an abyssal, lethal coldness. He turned back to the blond stranger.

"You have exactly thirty seconds to tell me your name before I have my men find out what your lungs look like from the inside," Vincent said softly.
The blond man’s smile faded completely. He realized, with a sudden, chilling certainty, that he was no longer bargaining with a businessman. He was standing in front of a monster that had just found a purpose.
