Chapter 3 - The Fortress of Glass and Stone

The drive took them out of the city limits, winding deep into the wealthy, secluded enclave of Chestnut Hill. The modern estate was hidden behind towering iron gates, surrounded by ancient oak trees whose fiery orange leaves carpeted the long driveway. The house itself was a breathtaking monument of stone, dark timber, and massive glass walls that overlooked a private ravine.

When the Rolls-Royce pulled up to the grand entrance, the door was opened not by a servant, but by Harper herself.

The little girl sprinted down the stone steps, her pink raincoat replaced by a soft cream sweater, still clutching the same worn stuffed rabbit. "Jasmine!" she cheered, throwing her small arms around Jasmine’s waist the moment she stepped out of the vehicle.

The pure, uncomplicated joy in the child's embrace caught Jasmine completely off guard. The walls of defensive anger she had built up during the drive cracked instantly. Jasmine knelt, hugging her back gently. "Hi, Harper. You look much warmer today."

"Daddy said you were coming to breakfast," Harper prattled, pulling Jasmine by the hand toward the massive oak front doors. "I told him you like hot chocolate because you work at the diner with the big marshmallow sign."

Jasmine allowed herself to be led into the grand foyer. The interior was minimalist, cold, and immensely expensive, filled with modern art and polished marble floors. But standing at the top of the floating glass staircase was the true master of the house.

Jackson Ford stood with one hand in his pocket, looking down at them. He had discarded his suit jacket, wearing a charcoal cashmere sweater with the sleeves pushed up his forearms, revealing a long, winding tattoo of a black viper that disappeared beneath his watch strap. His cold gray eyes locked onto Jasmine, analyzing her expression with predatory precision.

"You look tired, Jasmine," he said, his deep voice cascading down the stairs.

"I tend to stay awake when people put armed men outside my bedroom window, Mr. Ford," Jasmine said, her voice dripping with sarcasm as she refused to be intimidated.

Jackson descended the stairs slowly, his movements fluid and silent. When he reached the bottom, he stood less than two feet away from her, his sheer height and presence dominating the space. "The man on your fire escape was Dmitri. He is the best marksman in my organization. You were safer last night than the President of the United States."

"I didn't ask to be safe," Jasmine countered, crossing her arms. "I asked to be left alone."

"In my world, Jasmine," Jackson murmured, leaning down slightly so only she could hear his words, "the moment you touch something that belongs to me, you lose the luxury of being alone."
