Chapter 2 - The Whispering Ghost

The following week, the tension within the Ford empire escalated. Jasmine, working tirelessly at the downtown offices of the Harper Ford Foundation, began to notice subtle discrepancies in their donation streams. Large, anonymous wire transfers from offshore accounts in Cyprus were being routed into the foundation's charity accounts for vulnerable mothers.

"It’s too clean," Jasmine muttered to herself, staring at her laptop screen late on a Thursday evening. The office was quiet, the city lights of Philadelphia twinkling through the floor-to-ceiling windows. "Someone is trying to make it look like we are cleaning dirty money."

Suddenly, the lights in her office flickered and died, plunging the room into semi-darkness. Only the glow of her laptop illuminated her face. Her heart quickened. The silence of the empty office building felt suddenly heavy, suffocating.

The sound of a lock turning echoed from the outer reception area. Jasmine stood up slowly, her hand instinctively reaching for her phone on the desk. Before she could grab it, a tall, slender figure stepped out of the shadows of her doorway.

It was a woman, dressed in an elegant gray suit, her hair pulled back into a severe, flawless bun. Her face was striking, beautiful, but her eyes were cold, dead pools of blue.

"Jasmine Ford," the woman said, her voice smooth and chillingly polite. "Or should I say, the savior of the Viper?"

"Who are you?" Jasmine demanded, keeping her voice steady despite the adrenaline surging through her veins. She subtly pressed the panic button installed under the lip of her desk—a security measure Jackson had insisted on.

"My name is Victoria Vance," the woman replied, taking a slow step into the office. "I am the chief legal counsel for Vance Enterprises, but more importantly, I am the sister of Dmitry Ivanov. Or rather, I was, before your husband slaughtered him and took everything my family spent forty years building."

Jasmine’s breath hitched. Dmitry Ivanov had been the brutal patriarch who had tried to destroy them. She had thought his bloodline was entirely extinguished.

"Dmitry was a monster who trafficked in human lives," Jasmine said, her voice ringing with firm conviction. "If you are here for revenge, Victoria, you are fighting a war that has already been lost."

Victoria laughed, a dry, humorless sound. "Revenge is such a primitive concept, Jasmine. No, I am here for restoration. Jackson thinks he has cleaned his hands by building hospitals and feeding the poor. But his hands are stained with blood, and so are yours now. Those anonymous donations your foundation received this week? They are tied directly to an illegal arms shipment seized by federal agents in Boston three hours ago. By tomorrow morning, the FBI will have a warrant for your arrest."

Jasmine felt the cold dread pool in her stomach, but she refused to show weakness. "Jackson will stop you."

"Jackson is a dog who has been domesticated by his own guilt," Victoria sneered, leaning over the desk. "He has too much to lose now. And a man with everything to lose is the easiest man to destroy. Tell him the Wraith sends her regards."

Before Jasmine could react, the sound of heavy footsteps echoed down the hallway. Marcus and three armed security guards burst into the room, their weapons drawn. But Victoria didn't flinch. She simply smiled, raised her hands in a mocking gesture of surrender, and stepped back.

"Until tomorrow, Mrs. Ford," Victoria whispered.

Within minutes, Jackson arrived at the office, his face pale with a terrifying, wild fury. He threw his arms around Jasmine, checking her frantically for injuries, his chest heaving. "Are you hurt? Did she touch you?"

"I’m fine, Jackson, I’m fine," Jasmine insisted, holding his face in her hands to ground him. "But she’s framed us. The foundation... they’re going to tie us to Dmitry’s old weapons network."

Jackson’s eyes turned to cold, lethal steel. The beast was fully awake now. "She wants a war," he whispered, his voice trembling with a deadly promise. "I will give her one that will burn her to ash."
