Chapter 6 - THE WOMAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH

Connor was not arrested.
Not yet.
The detectives wanted documents.
Financial records.
Medical records.
Communication logs.
The wedding ended before the cake was cut.
Guests left whispering.
Alyssa disappeared through a side entrance.
Betsy refused to speak to anyone.
Connor remained behind.
As I walked outside, he followed me.
"You destroyed everything."
I stopped.
"No."
"You knew what would happen."
"I knew the truth would eventually catch up."
He stepped closer.
"You think you've won?"
I looked at him.
"No."
"Then why are you smiling?"
"Because I finally understand."
"Understand what?"
"You never loved me."
His expression flickered.
"You married me because my family could make you powerful."
Silence.
"And when you thought Alyssa could give you a son, you decided I was disposable."
His voice became bitter.
"You gave me a daughter."
I looked down at Brinley.
"And she gave me a reason to stop being afraid."
Connor stared at us.
Then he whispered:
"You're going to regret this."
I smiled.
"Maybe."
I walked away.
That evening, Parker received another anonymous package.
Inside was a flash drive.
The files showed Connor meeting Betsy's financial adviser.
They discussed moving company assets into offshore accounts.
But there was more.
A recording.
Betsy said:
"Once the divorce is final, she'll have no idea where the money went."
Connor answered:
"She'll sign."
Then another voice entered.
Alyssa.
"I need the baby story to hold."
My blood went cold.
The pregnancy wasn't an accident.
It had been planned.
But why?
Parker played the recording again.
At the end, someone mentioned a name.
A name I recognized.
My father's former business partner.
The man who had disappeared from our family years ago.
Parker looked at me.
"This is bigger than Connor."
May you like
I nodded.
"Then let's find him."
