Chapter 13 - THE COURTROOM

The courtroom was packed.
Reporters waited outside.
Connor arrived with a new attorney.
Betsy sat behind him.
Alyssa was nowhere to be seen.
I entered carrying Brinley.
The judge reviewed the documents.
Connor's attorney argued that Connor had built his business independently.
Parker presented the trust agreements.
The judge asked:
"Mr. Hale, did you know the initial capital originated from the Bennett Family Trust?"
Connor hesitated.
"No."
Parker placed another document before the court.
"Did you know your wife was the sole beneficiary?"
Connor's attorney objected.
The judge overruled.
Connor finally whispered:
"No."
The judge looked at him.
"Then why did you represent these assets as your separate property?"
Connor had no answer.
Then came the medical records.
The fertility documents.
The forged consent form.
The financial transfers.
The recordings.
The investigators' findings.
By the end of the hearing, Connor's entire story had collapsed.
The judge denied his property claims.
The corporate assets connected to my trust were protected.
The court ordered a full forensic accounting.
And the divorce was granted.
Connor looked at me across the courtroom.
His eyes were red.
"You ruined me."
I stood.
"No."
I held Brinley closer.
"You ruined yourself."
Then the judge delivered the final order.
Connor was required to surrender control of the disputed companies.
Betsy faced separate legal proceedings.
The fraudulent financial transfers were referred for criminal investigation.
And Connor's divorce settlement was almost nothing compared to what he had expected.
As I walked outside, reporters surrounded me.
I ignored every question.
I didn't want revenge to become a spectacle.
I wanted Brinley to grow up knowing something simple.
