Chapter 11 - BETSY'S LAST CARD

Betsy tried to leave.
Investigators stopped her.
She turned toward me.
"You think this is over?"
I said nothing.
She leaned close.
"You have no idea what your father left behind."
I froze.
"What does that mean?"
She smiled.
"Ask Parker."
I turned.
Parker looked uncomfortable.
"What isn't he telling me?"
He sighed.
"There's another trust."
"Whose?"
"Your father's."
"What about it?"
"It contains a controlling interest in several companies."
My eyes widened.
"How many?"
"Seven."
Connor overheard.
His face collapsed.
Seven companies.
Not one.
Seven.
Betsy had spent years trying to get control.
Connor had spent years believing he was building an empire.
And I had unknowingly owned the foundation.
Betsy laughed bitterly.
"Your father wanted you to inherit everything."
I looked at her.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"Because if you knew, you would never have married Connor."
Silence.
Connor stared at his mother.
"You knew?"
Betsy didn't answer.
"You knew she owned everything?"
Still nothing.
"You lied to me for six years?"
Betsy finally shouted:
"I was trying to protect this family!"
Connor laughed.
A broken, bitter sound.
"Protect us?"
He pointed at me.
"You destroyed my life."
Betsy slapped him.
"You were supposed to control her!"
The room went silent.
Connor slowly turned toward his mother.
"You planned all of this?"
Betsy said nothing.
That was enough.
Connor looked at me.
For the first time, he seemed genuinely afraid.
Not angry.
Not arrogant.
Afraid.
Because he finally understood.

I wasn't the abandoned wife.
I was the person who could destroy the empire he had spent six years pretending to own.
