Chapter 14 - THE VERDICT
The verdict came two days later.
Guilty.
On multiple charges.
Luke's face remained expressionless.
Margaret was also convicted for her role in the financial fraud and evidence tampering.
Caroline sat beside Emily.
She didn't celebrate.
There was nothing to celebrate.
Too much had been lost.
Too many years.
Too many memories.
Too much pain.
But when the judge announced the sentence, Caroline finally exhaled.
Luke was taken away.
As he passed her, he stopped.
For one second, their eyes met.
He whispered:
“You'll never be happy without me.”
Caroline looked at him.
Then she smiled.
“Watch me.”
The doors closed behind him.
Emily took Caroline's hand.
“It's over.”
Caroline shook her head.
“No.”
Emily looked at her.
“It's beginning.”
Months passed.
Caroline moved into a small house near the ocean.
She painted the walls herself.
She bought furniture without asking permission.
She chose what she ate.
When she wanted silence, she had silence.
When she wanted music, she played music.
The first morning she woke without fear, she cried.
Not because she was sad.
Because she realized how peaceful ordinary life could be.
No footsteps outside the bedroom.
No shouting.
No accusations.
No threats.
No one telling her what she was worth.
She began therapy.
She helped Jessica start over.
She stayed in contact with Noah through the appropriate channels.
And slowly, Caroline rebuilt herself.
Then one afternoon, she received a letter.
There was no return address.
Inside was a single photograph.
Three tiny ultrasound images.
The same ones Luke had kept hidden.
On the back was a message.
They mattered.
Caroline stared at it.
Then she cried.
Because for years, Luke had told her those pregnancies meant nothing.
