Chapter 1 - The Number He Couldn’t Erase

The phone rang twice.
Then someone answered.
“Hello?”
Caroline closed her eyes.
She knew that voice.
For the first time in years, she allowed herself to breathe.
“Emily?”
There was silence.
Then her sister whispered, “Caroline?”
Luke froze.
It was the first time Caroline had ever seen genuine fear cross his face.
Not anger.
Not annoyance.
Fear.
The nurse noticed it too.
Emily’s voice trembled through the phone.
“Where are you?”
Caroline swallowed against the pain in her throat.
“The hospital.”
“What happened?”
Caroline looked directly at Luke.
“He did it.”
Luke stepped forward.
The nurse immediately raised a hand.
“Stay where you are.”
His jaw tightened.
Caroline heard Emily inhale sharply.
“Who?”
“Luke.”
The room went silent.
Luke shook his head.
“No. No, she's confused.”
Caroline forced herself to speak.
“He poured boiling water on me.”
Emily began crying.
Not loudly.
That somehow made it worse.
For years, Caroline had imagined telling her sister everything.
She had imagined screaming.
She had imagined sobbing.
Instead, all she could manage was three words.
“I need you.”
Emily answered immediately.
“I’m coming.”
The call ended.
Luke stared at Caroline.
“You really think she can save you?”
Caroline didn't answer.
He stepped closer.
“You have nothing.”
The doctor walked between them.
“She has medical evidence.”
Luke's face hardened.
The doctor continued.
“And witnesses.”
He looked toward the nurse.
“And security cameras.”
Luke stopped breathing for half a second.
Caroline noticed.
The nurse quietly said, “The emergency entrance camera captured you carrying her into the hospital.”
Luke looked at the floor.
“But that doesn't prove anything.”
“No,” the doctor replied. “But the injuries might.”
She turned toward Caroline.
“We need to document everything.”
Luke suddenly became agitated.
“You can't interrogate her while she's on medication.”
The doctor looked at him coldly.
“We aren't asking you.”
Two security officers entered the room.
Luke's eyes darted toward the door.
For the first time, Caroline realized something.
He wasn't afraid of losing her.
He was afraid of losing control.
One officer approached.
“Sir, we need you to come with us.”
Luke pointed at Caroline.
“She is my wife.”
The officer didn't blink.
“She is also our patient.”
Luke lowered his voice.
“You don't understand.”
The officer replied, “Then you can explain it downstairs.”
Luke stared at Caroline.
There was hatred in his eyes.
But underneath it was something else.
Panic.
As they led him away, he stopped at the doorway.
“You'll regret this.”
Caroline's heart began pounding.
The nurse moved closer.
“Don't listen to him.”
But Caroline wasn't listening to Luke anymore.
She was staring at the doorway.
Because she suddenly remembered something.
Something Luke had forgotten.
Something he had never known she knew.
A small metal box.
Hidden beneath a loose floorboard in their bedroom.
Inside it were every pregnancy test.
Every ultrasound photograph.
Every prescription.
Every hospital discharge paper.
And one handwritten note from a doctor Caroline had seen three years earlier.
A note Luke had ordered her to destroy.
Caroline looked at the nurse.
“Can you call my sister again?”
“Of course.”
“And tell her…”
Caroline paused.
“Tell her to go to my house.”
The nurse frowned.
“Why?”
“Because there's something there.”
May you like
Caroline's fingers trembled.
“Something Luke thought he had destroyed.”
