Chapter 10 - THE OTHER WOMAN

Her name was Jessica Lane.
She had worked with Luke for years.
She was also the woman Caroline had once believed was his mistress.
But the truth was stranger.
Jessica wasn't his lover.
She was his accountant.
And she had been terrified of him too.
When Detective Reed found her, she agreed to talk.
Jessica arrived at the police station carrying a folder.
“I've been waiting for someone to ask.”
Caroline sat across from her.
“Why didn't you come forward?”
Jessica looked ashamed.
“Because I was afraid.”
Caroline almost smiled.
“Everyone was afraid.”
Jessica opened the folder.
“Luke created a company in my name.”
She explained that he had used her identity to move money.
Then she revealed something else.
The fertility clinic payments were not for another woman.
They were for Caroline.
Luke had secretly paid the clinic to obtain copies of her medical records.
“He wanted to know whether you could have children.”
Caroline stared at her.
“Why?”
Jessica hesitated.
“Because he had already made a deal.”
“What deal?”
“With his family.”
Jessica slid a document across the table.
Luke had promised Margaret that if Caroline produced a son, the boy would inherit a large portion of the family fortune.
But there was another clause.
If Caroline failed to produce a male heir, Luke would receive control of her inheritance.
Caroline stared at the document.
“So the baby wasn't the goal.”
Jessica shook her head.
“The baby was the excuse.”
Caroline felt tears burning her eyes.
Luke had spent years pretending he needed a son.
In reality, he needed Caroline to believe she had failed.
Then Jessica said:
“There is one more thing.”
“What?”
“Luke has a child.”
Caroline froze.
“What?”
May you like
Jessica looked at her.
“A son.”
