Chapter 13 - THE COURTROOM

The courtroom was packed.

Luke entered wearing an expensive suit.

For a moment, Caroline saw the man she had married.

The charming man.

The successful man.

The man everyone trusted.

Then she remembered the hospital.

And she looked away.

Luke's attorney began by attacking Caroline's credibility.

He called her emotional.

Unstable.

Traumatized.

The prosecutor didn't react.

She simply waited.

Then she called the first witness.

Dr. Helen Morris.

The doctor explained the medical evidence.

Then came the financial investigator.

Then Jessica.

Then the officer who discovered the hidden room.

Finally, Detective Reed played the recording.

Luke's own voice filled the courtroom.

“I don't need her to love me. I only need her to believe she can't live without me.”

Silence.

Luke's face changed.

The prosecutor played another recording.

Then another.

Then photographs appeared on the screen.

Caroline closed her eyes.

She didn't want to watch.

She didn't need to.

The courtroom had already seen enough.

Then the prosecutor presented the final document.

The forged inheritance contract.

A handwriting expert explained that Caroline's signature had been copied.

Luke's attorney stood.

“Objection.”

The judge denied it.

Then the prosecutor turned toward Luke.

“You told everyone your wife was unstable.”

Luke said nothing.

“You told the hospital she injured herself.”

Silence.

“You told her family she was infertile.”

Nothing.

“You told her she had nowhere to go.”

Luke's jaw tightened.

Then the prosecutor said:

“But you never expected her to survive long enough to tell the truth.”

The courtroom went silent.

Caroline opened her eyes.

For the first time, Luke looked small.

Not powerful.

Not frightening.

Small.

The judge eventually asked Caroline whether she wanted to make a statement.

She stood.

Her hands trembled.

But her voice didn't.

“I believed him when he told me I was broken.”

She looked at Luke.

“I believed him when he told me nobody would believe me.”

A pause.

“But I don't believe him anymore.”

Luke looked down.

Caroline continued.

“He wanted me to disappear.”

May you like

She looked at the judge.

“So I decided to become impossible to erase.”
