Chapter 8 - THE PHOTOGRAPH

The photograph had been taken during our wedding reception.
I had never seen it.
In the background, Ryan's father stood near a window.
Beside him was Margaret.
And between them sat a folder.
The sender wrote:
Ask Margaret what happened that night.
I called Allison.
She told me not to respond.
So I didn't.
Instead, we tracked the photograph.
It came from the wedding photographer's archive.
Someone had accessed the old files.
We subpoenaed the archive.
Three days later, another envelope arrived.
Inside was a second photograph.
This time, Ryan's father was speaking directly to Ryan.
The timestamp was visible.
8:46 p.m.
My wedding night.
Then came the audio.
A recording.
Old.
Distorted.
But understandable.
Ryan's father's voice:
"She cannot know yet."
Ryan:
"How long?"
His father:
"Until the marriage is secure."
Ryan:
"And the trust?"
"Untouched unless she divorces you."
My breathing stopped.
Ryan asked:
"What if she leaves?"
His father answered:
"Then you lose everything."
The recording ended.
I sat in silence.
Allison listened twice.
"Now we have motive."
I shook my head.
"No."
"What?"
"Now we have proof."
She nodded.
The next hearing was brutal.
Ryan's attorney attempted to argue that the recording was irrelevant.
The judge disagreed.
Then Allison introduced the trust documents.
The financial transfers.
The email from Margaret.
The townhouse lease.
The payments to Vanessa.
The insurance policies.
One by one.
Piece by piece.
The carefully constructed image of Ryan Bennett began to collapse.
The judge asked him:
"Mr. Bennett, did you know about Mrs. Bennett's trust before your marriage?"
Ryan's attorney objected.
The judge overruled.
Ryan finally said:
"Yes."
I closed my eyes.
The judge continued.
"Did you enter the marriage with knowledge of the trust?"
"Yes."
"Did you tell your wife?"
"No."
"Why?"
Ryan looked at me.
"I thought it wasn't relevant."
I almost laughed.
The judge didn't.
"Your wife had a financial interest that could become significant upon divorce."
Ryan remained silent.
The judge leaned back.
"That appears relevant."
After the hearing, Ryan approached me.
"You've ruined everything."
I looked at him.
"No, Ryan."
I held his gaze.
"You did."
He lowered his voice.
"You don't understand."
"I understand perfectly."
"You think Vanessa planned this?"
I frowned.
"What?"
He looked away.
"I didn't do everything alone."
My heart stopped.
"What does that mean?"
He didn't answer.
Instead, he walked away.
I turned toward Allison.
"What was that?"
She watched him disappear.
"I don't know."
But that night, Vanessa called me.
I answered.
"Claire."
"What do you want?"
"I want to tell you something."
"I don't care."
"You should."
Her voice trembled.
"Ryan lied to me too."
I said nothing.
"He told me you had nothing."
"He was wrong."
"I know."
"What did he promise you?"
"Everything."
She laughed bitterly.
"The house."
"The money."
"The company."
"And now?"
"Now I know the company was never his to give."
Silence.
Then Vanessa whispered:
"Ryan used me."
I stared into the darkness.
"Why are you telling me?"
"Because I have evidence."
My heart began beating faster.
May you like
"What kind?"
"Enough to destroy him."
