Chapter 5 - THE HEARING

The courtroom was colder than I expected.
Ryan sat across the aisle.
He looked exhausted.
For the first time in nine years, he looked like a man who couldn't control the room.
Vanessa wasn't there.
Neither was Margaret.
Daniel was.
He wouldn't look at me.
The judge entered.
Everyone stood.
The hearing began.
Ryan's attorney spoke first.
"Your Honor, Mr. Bennett is deeply concerned about the sudden removal of his children from their home."
I almost smiled.
Sudden.
As if I hadn't spent years being slowly pushed out of my own marriage.
The attorney continued.
"Mrs. Bennett is eight months pregnant and has demonstrated increasing emotional instability."
Allison stood.
"Your Honor, we strongly dispute that characterization."
The judge looked at her.
"Do you have evidence?"
"We do."
Allison submitted the financial records.
Then the corporate documents.
Then the emails.
Then the recording.
Ryan's attorney objected repeatedly.
But the judge kept listening.
Finally, the judge looked directly at Ryan.
"Mr. Bennett, did you create Bennett Strategic Holdings?"
"Yes."
"Did you transfer marital funds into it?"
Ryan hesitated.
"Some funds."
"Did you assign Ms. Cole an ownership interest?"
Silence.
The judge looked at him again.
"Mr. Bennett?"
"Yes."
I watched him swallow.
"Why?"
"My wife was financially irresponsible."
The judge raised an eyebrow.
"Your wife was financially irresponsible, so you created a company and gave part ownership to your romantic partner?"
Ryan's attorney stood.
"Your Honor—"
The judge raised a hand.
"Sit down."
The courtroom went silent.
Then the judge turned toward me.
"Mrs. Bennett, why did you leave the marital residence?"
I looked at Ryan.
Then back at the judge.
"My husband brought another woman into our home and announced she would be moving into our guest suite."
"Did you fear for your physical safety?"
"No."
"Then why did you leave?"
I took a breath.
"Because I realized my husband had already decided I didn't belong in my own marriage."
The judge nodded slowly.
"And you are requesting temporary custody?"
"Yes."
"Are you willing to facilitate reasonable parenting time?"
"Yes."
Ryan looked at me.
For the first time, I saw confusion in his eyes.
He expected me to demand everything.
Instead, I asked for stability.
The judge issued temporary orders.
The children would remain with me.
Ryan would have scheduled visitation.
Neither parent would remove the children from the jurisdiction.
Financial records would be reviewed.
And the court would consider the disputed marital assets at a later hearing.
As we walked out, Ryan caught up with me.
"Claire."
I stopped.
"You did this to me."
I stared at him.
"No."
"You destroyed my life."
I shook my head.
"Ryan, I didn't destroy your life."
I looked toward the courthouse doors.
"You built it."
Then I walked away.
Outside, Allison handed me my coat.
"How are you feeling?"
I looked at the sky.
"Like the first battle is over."
She smiled.
"Good."
"What?"
"You finally said it."
"Said what?"
"Battle."
I nodded.
Because that was exactly what this had become.
But neither of us knew that the next piece of evidence would come from someone Ryan trusted more than anyone.
May you like
His brother.
Daniel.
