Chapter 2 - THE WOMAN HE THOUGHT HAD NOTHING

The hotel room was small.

Two beds.

One chair.

A microwave.

A bathroom with a door that didn't close properly.

It was not beautiful.

It was not luxurious.

But when I locked the door behind us, I felt something I hadn't felt inside my marriage for years.

Safe.

Ethan sat on one bed.

Sophie sat on the other.

I placed the suitcases near the wall.

"Are we really staying here?"

"For tonight."

"Where's Dad?"

I sat beside him.

"At home."

"With Vanessa?"

I hesitated.

"Yes."

Ethan looked down.

"Is she his new wife?"

My throat tightened.

"No."

"Does Dad love her?"

"I don't know."

That was the most honest answer I could give.

Sophie climbed into my lap.

"Mom?"

"Yes?"

"Is the baby coming?"

I smiled despite everything.

"Not tonight, hopefully."

She placed her little hand on my stomach.

"Maybe he knows we're moving."

I laughed softly.

"Maybe."

The baby kicked.

Sophie gasped.

"He heard me!"

For the first time that night, I laughed.

A real laugh.

Then my phone rang.

Allison.

"Claire, are you somewhere safe?"

"Yes."

"Good."

"Ryan knows."

"I assumed he would."

"He has the petition."

There was silence.

"How did he react?"

"He looked like someone had unplugged him."

Allison laughed once.

"That sounds about right."

I looked toward the window.

"I need to ask you something."

"Go ahead."

"If Ryan files for emergency custody, can he take the kids?"

"Not simply because he says he wants them."

"What about my pregnancy?"

"Your pregnancy isn't a legal weakness."

"Ryan has been telling people I'm unstable."

"I know."

I sat straighter.

"You know?"

"Claire, I've been doing my job."

She paused.

"I've reviewed what you sent me."

I looked at the leather folder.

"And?"

"There's enough here to make his situation uncomfortable."

"How uncomfortable?"

"Potentially very."

I closed my eyes.

"There's something else."

"What?"

"The recording."

"Of tonight?"

"Yes."

"Keep the original file."

"I have it."

"Don't edit it."

"I won't."

"Don't threaten him with it."

"I won't."

"And don't send it to anyone."

"Why?"

"Because once lawyers become involved, you want evidence handled carefully."

I nodded.

Then Allison said something that made my stomach drop.

"Claire, I need you to check something."

"What?"

"Your joint accounts."

"I checked before leaving."

"No. I mean now."

I grabbed my laptop.

"Why?"

"Because men who suddenly realize they're losing control sometimes try to control the money."

I opened the bank portal.

My password worked.

I stared at the balances.

Then my blood went cold.

The account we had used for household expenses had been reduced to $1,843.

It had contained more than $38,000.

I checked the savings account.

$217.

The college account for Ethan and Sophie was empty.

I stared at the screen.

"He moved it."

Allison was silent.

"How much?"

"Almost everything."

"Claire."

"I knew he'd try."

"No," Allison said. "You knew he might try."

Her voice became firm.

"There's a difference."

I checked the transaction history.

Multiple transfers.

Different dates.

Different amounts.

Most went to an account I didn't recognize.

But one payment caught my eye.

$12,500.

Recipient:

Bennett Strategic Holdings.

I whispered, "What is that?"

Allison asked, "What?"

"There's a company."

"What company?"

"Bennett Strategic Holdings."

She paused.

"Does Ryan own it?"

"I've never heard of it."

"Then find out."

I opened another browser.

The company was registered in Delaware.

The listed manager was Ryan Bennett.

I stared at the screen.

My husband had been moving our family money into a company I knew nothing about.

Then I noticed something else.

The company had been formed eight months earlier.

Eight months.

The same month Ryan had started telling me he was "worried about our financial future."

I felt sick.

He hadn't been protecting our future.

He had been building one without me.

I forwarded the information to Allison.

She responded immediately.

"Do not contact him."

"I wasn't going to."

"Good."

I closed the laptop.

Ethan was asleep.

Sophie was curled around Bunny.

I sat between their beds.

My hand rested on my stomach.

The baby moved again.

"You're going to have a complicated family," I whispered.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message from Ryan.

YOU THINK YOU'VE WON?

Another.

YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHAT I'M ABOUT TO DO.

Then another.

YOU WILL REGRET TAKING MY CHILDREN.

I stared at the messages.

For months, I had been afraid of him.

Tonight, something changed.

I wasn't afraid of Ryan anymore.

I was afraid of what he might do.

And there was a difference.

I forwarded every message to Allison.

Then I turned off my phone.

The next morning, Ryan filed for emergency custody.

But he made one mistake.

May you like

He assumed the judge would believe the story he had been telling everyone.

He didn't know I had spent three weeks collecting the truth.
