Chapter 3 - HIS FIRST MOVE

At 8:14 the next morning, someone knocked on the hotel door.

I knew before I opened it.

Police.

Two officers stood in the hallway.

Behind them was Ryan's attorney.

I recognized him from photographs.

"Mrs. Bennett?"

"Yes."

"I'm Attorney Mark Dalton. Mr. Bennett has filed an emergency petition concerning the children."

I felt my stomach tighten.

"Is there an order?"

He hesitated.

"Not yet."

"Then why are you here?"

He smiled politely.

"To discuss temporary arrangements."

I stepped into the hallway and closed the door behind me.

"My children are sleeping."

"We need to ensure they're safe."

"They are."

One officer looked uncomfortable.

The other asked, "May we speak with you?"

"Yes."

I explained everything.

No exaggeration.

No accusations.

Just facts.

My husband had introduced his mistress to our children.

He had announced she would live in our home.

I had left because I believed the environment had become emotionally unsafe.

The attorney interrupted.

"Mrs. Bennett has a history of emotional instability during pregnancy."

I looked at him.

"Do I?"

He pulled out a document.

I recognized the language immediately.

It was the narrative Ryan had been building.

Anxiety.

Mood swings.

Irrational behavior.

Financial irresponsibility.

Possessiveness.

I almost laughed.

"You brought that?"

"It's relevant."

"Then let's make everything relevant."

I pulled out my phone.

I showed the officer the text messages.

Then the bank transfers.

Then the recording from the previous evening.

The attorney's expression changed.

"Where did you get those?"

"I was there."

He looked at the officer.

The officer listened to the recording.

Ryan's voice filled the hallway.

"Vanessa and I are together, and the guest suite is empty, so she will be staying here."

Then another voice.

My own.

"Actually, Ryan, we are finished."

The officer listened quietly.

When it ended, he returned the phone.

"Mrs. Bennett, do you have somewhere else to stay?"

"Yes."

"Are the children safe?"

"Yes."

He nodded.

"Then there's no immediate basis for us to remove them."

Ryan's attorney stepped forward.

"This is not over."

I met his eyes.

"I know."

After they left, I returned to the room.

Ethan was awake.

"Mom?"

"It's okay."

"Was that Dad?"

"No."

He looked relieved.

I sat beside him.

A few minutes later, Allison called.

"How did it go?"

"Ryan sent his attorney."

"I know."

"How?"

"He filed the petition at 7:03."

"He wants emergency custody because I left."

"Yes."

"Will it work?"

"No."

The confidence in her voice surprised me.

"Why?"

"Because emergency custody requires more than your husband being angry."

She paused.

"And Claire?"

"Yes?"

"There's something else."

"What?"

"His filing contains financial declarations."

"Okay."

"He says he has been paying nearly all household expenses."

I frowned.

"He has."

"Not according to the bank records."

I understood.

"He lied."

"Apparently."

I closed my eyes.

"Can that hurt him?"

"Potentially."

Then Allison said:

"Claire, I need you to come to my office."

"Today?"

"Today."

"What happened?"

"I found something in the company records."

My pulse increased.

"What?"

"The company Ryan created."

"Bennett Strategic Holdings."

"Yes."

"What about it?"

"It isn't just a shell company."

"Then what is it?"

Allison lowered her voice.

"There's another person listed as a beneficiary."

I waited.

"Vanessa Cole."

The room seemed to tilt.

My husband's mistress wasn't simply living in my guest suite.

She had been financially connected to him long before he brought her into my home.

And suddenly I understood something.

This wasn't an affair that had gone too far.

May you like

It was a plan.

And I had just interrupted it.
