Chapter 14 - THE NEW BEGINNING
Six months later, the company had changed.
No family members held executive positions.
Every account required independent approval.
Every major transaction was audited.
And the trust was placed under professional management.
Clara became chairman of the foundation we created.
She used the money to help women who had been trapped in abusive homes and families.
She never talked about herself as a victim.
She called herself a survivor.
I loved that distinction.
One evening, I found her sitting on the back porch.
The same porch where we'd once planned our future.
I sat beside her.
“Do you remember this place?”
She smiled.
“You proposed here.”
“No.”
She laughed.
“You did.”
“I almost did.”
“What do you mean?”
I reached into my pocket.
She stared at me.
“Julian.”
I opened a small box.
Inside was a new necklace.
Not the original diamond necklace.
Something different.
A simple gold pendant.
She looked confused.
“What is it?”
“Your initials.”
She touched it.
“Why?”
“Because the first necklace was supposed to prove I could finally afford something beautiful.”
I took her hand.
“This one is to remind me that the most valuable thing in my life was never something I could buy.”
Tears filled her eyes.
She kissed me.
“I don't need another necklace.”
“I know.”
“Then why buy it?”
“Because I wanted to.”
She smiled.
“Fair enough.”
We sat together in silence.
Then she whispered:
“Do you ever wish you hadn't come home early?”
I looked at her.
“Never.”
“If you had arrived on schedule…”
“I know.”
She leaned against my shoulder.
“I was so scared.”
“I know.”
“I thought you would blame me.”
“I would never blame you for surviving.”
She closed her eyes.
For the first time in months, she looked peaceful.
Then my phone rang.
Marcus.
I answered.
“Sir.”
“What is it?”
“We received a letter.”
“From whom?”
He hesitated.
“Your father.”
My blood went cold.
“That isn't possible.”
“We thought so too.”
I looked at Clara.
“Open it.”
Marcus's voice became quiet.
“There's one problem.”

“What?”
“The letter was mailed yesterday.”
