Chapter 13 - THE CHOICE

The shot hit the wall.
Adrian tackled me.
Security rushed in.
Evelyn disappeared through a side door.
I ran toward Clara.
“Are you hurt?”
She shook her head.
“No.”
I pulled her into my arms.
For a few seconds, nothing else mattered.
Then Marcus entered.
“We caught her.”
Evelyn was brought into the room.
She looked at Clara.
“You won.”
Clara shook her head.
“No.”
Evelyn frowned.
“I didn't win.”
She stepped closer.
“I survived.”
That sentence silenced everyone.
Clara explained what Evelyn had told her.
Evelyn's mother had been betrayed by my father.
But Evelyn had spent years punishing innocent people for crimes they didn't commit.
She had become exactly what she hated.
Evelyn finally admitted everything.
The financial theft.
The forged documents.
The threats.
The fire.
The kidnapping.
Then she gave us the final piece.
A recording of my father.
It revealed that he had planned to confess everything publicly.
But he had died before he could.
I watched the recording with Clara beside me.
My father looked directly into the camera.
“I failed both my sons.”
He admitted everything.
Then he said:
“Julian, if you ever hear this, don't repeat my mistakes.”
I closed my eyes.
“I won't.”
The investigation lasted months.
Daniel cooperated fully.
My mother testified.
Sienna apologized to Clara.
Some relatives disappeared.
Others begged for forgiveness.
Clara forgave some.
Not all.
And that was okay.
Forgiveness didn't mean allowing people back into your life.
Sometimes it meant simply refusing to let their cruelty own your future.
But one final problem remained.
The company board wanted to know whether I would continue as CEO.
I looked at Clara.
She smiled.
“Go.”
May you like
I stood.
“I have unfinished business.”
