Chapter 11 - THE LAST SECRET

Adrian entered.
“We have a problem.”
I looked at him.
“What now?”
He handed me his phone.
A photograph.
Margaret.
Walking into a private airport.
Taken two days earlier.
Before the fire.
“That isn't Margaret.”
I stared.
It was her.
But not the woman we arrested.
The photograph showed another woman who looked almost identical.
A twin.
Clara whispered:
“She has a sister?”
Adrian nodded.
“Evelyn.”
My mother went pale.
“You're lying.”
Adrian looked at her.
“No.”
My mother sat down.
“Evelyn was supposed to be dead.”
That sentence changed everything.
Years earlier, Evelyn had supposedly died in a car accident.
But she hadn't.
She had disappeared.
And apparently, she had spent decades planning revenge.
Marcus arrived.
“Sir, we traced the shell companies.”
“Whose?”
“Evelyn's.”
The stolen twenty-three million hadn't gone to Margaret.
It had gone to Evelyn.
The woman behind everything.
Daniel's stolen money.
Adrian's manipulation.
The forged will.
The fire.
The threats.
All of it.
My phone rang.
I answered.
A woman's voice whispered:
“You finally figured it out.”
“Evelyn.”
She laughed.
“Your father ruined my life.”
“What do you want?”
“Everything he promised me.”
“You'll never get it.”
“Oh, Julian.”
She sounded amused.
“I don't need the company.”
“What do you need?”
“The one thing your father loved more than money.”
I froze.
“My mother?”
“No.”
She paused.
“Your wife.”
The call ended.
I looked at Clara.
May you like
She was standing behind me.
And the security alarm suddenly began screaming.
