Chapter 8 - The First Day of School

The golden morning sun filtered through the high stone arches of the Colegio Interamericano, one of the most prestigious schools in Mexico City.

A sleek black SUV pulled up to the drop-off lane. The door opened, and Mateo hopped out, wearing his navy-blue school uniform. Right behind him stepped Lupita. She wore the matching girl’s uniform—a pleated skirt, a crisp white blouse, and beautifully polished black leather shoes. Her hair was braided neatly with red ribbons, matching the school colors.

She stopped at the entrance, looking at the massive iron gates and the large crowds of wealthy children waving goodbye to their parents. For a moment, a flash of the old fear crossed her face. She looked down at her shoes, as if she still couldn't believe they belonged to her.

Alejandro stepped out of the car, walking over to her. He knelt down, adjusting the straps of her new leather backpack.

"Are you nervous, Lupita?" he asked gently.

She nodded slowly. "Everyone looks so clean and smart, Mr. Alejandro. What if they find out I used to sell candy in the metro?"

Mateo took her hand, squeezing it tightly. "If anyone says anything, I’ll tell them you are the bravest girl in the world. I’ll tell them you can carry a whole boy on your back!"

Lupita giggled, the tension instantly leaving her small shoulders.

Alejandro looked at her with deep affection. "Lupita, where you come from doesn't define who you are. Your heart is bigger than anyone's in this school. Be proud of who you are, because you are a hero. Now go on, don't be late for your first class."

Lupita looked at Alejandro, her eyes bright with gratitude. "Thank you, Papa Alejandro," she said, the words slipping out naturally before she realized what she had said. She blushed slightly.

Alejandro’s heart swelled, a profound warmth spreading through his chest. He smiled, a tear threatening to spill from his eye. "You're welcome, mi hija. Have a wonderful day."

He watched as the two children ran through the gates together, hand in hand, their laughter blending with the morning breeze.
