Chapter 6 - A Home in the Hills

Two weeks later, a moving truck pulled up to a small, beautiful house in the quiet, green neighborhood of Coyoacán. The house had a large garden filled with fruit trees and flowers, a far cry from the cramped, concrete room Lupita and her grandmother had rented near the noisy metro station.
Alejandro had purchased the property under a private trust, ensuring that the title belonged permanently to Lupita and her grandmother. He had also hired a full-time private nurse to assist the grandmother with her medical care and a tutor to help Lupita prepare for her enrollment in one of the city’s top private academies.
Lupita ran through the grass of her new backyard, her laughter filling the quiet afternoon air. Mateo was right behind her, carrying a small soccer ball.
"Look, Abuela!" Lupita cried out, pointing to a large lemon tree in the corner. "We can make lemonade whenever we want!"
The grandmother sat on the porch in a comfortable rocking chair, a clean white apron over her dress. She watched the children with tears of profound relief in her eyes. For the first time in thirty years, the crushing weight of poverty had been lifted from her shoulders. She no longer had to wake up at 4:00 AM to prepare candy trays, terrified that a single day of illness would leave them homeless.
Alejandro walked up the garden path, carrying a basket of fresh pastries. He sat down on the porch step near the grandmother.
"Are you settling in well, Señora?" he asked.

"It feels like a dream, Don Alejandro," she said, her voice shaking slightly. "Every morning I wake up and I think I am still in the old room, smelling the exhaust from the buses. I cannot thank you enough."
"You don't have to thank me," Alejandro said softly, watching Mateo and Lupita kick the ball back and forth. "Seeing my son run like that... seeing him breathe without pain... that is all the thanks I will ever need. Lupita didn't just save Mateo that day. She saved me from a life of trusting the wrong people. She brought truth back into this family."
