Chapter 7 - The Trial of Accountability

The trial of Renata Robles began two months later. It was the most highly publicized court case in the recent history of the country. The courtroom was packed with journalists, sketch artists, and curious onlookers from all walks of life.
Renata sat at the defense table, wearing a plain gray prison uniform, her hair unwashed and pulled back into a messy bun. Her father sat behind her, his face pale and sunken, his empire completely dismantled by the financial investigations Alejandro had triggered.
Alejandro sat in the front row of the gallery, his face expressionless, his presence commanding absolute respect.
The prosecutor played the park video on a massive projection screen in the courtroom. As the image of Renata hiding behind the oak tree while Mateo choked on the grass filled the room, a collective murmur of outrage erupted from the jury.
The defense attorney stood up, attempting a desperate final argument. "Your Honor, my client panicked. She is a young woman who was suddenly faced with a medical emergency she did not understand. The barefoot girl was already approaching, and my client believed the situation was under control."
The prosecutor then produced the forensic report on the EpiPen found in Renata’s pocket.
"Panicked, counselor?" the prosecutor asked, his voice ringing through the courtroom. "Is it an act of panic to apply industrial cyanoacrylate adhesive to the safety cap of a child's life-saving medication days in advance? This was not panic. This was a calculated execution by omission."
Renata burst into tears, covering her face with her hands, but this time, there were no cameras to care about her fake sorrow.

The judge did not hesitate. After a brief deliberation by the jury, the sentence was handed down: twenty-five years in a maximum-security prison with no possibility of parole. Her father was taken into custody immediately after for financial fraud and complicity in the embezzlement of public funds.
As Renata was led away in chains, she looked at Alejandro, her eyes filled with desperate pleading. Alejandro did not look back. He stood up, buttoned his suit jacket, and walked out of the courtroom into the bright sunlight, completely closing that dark chapter of his life.
