Chapter 5 - THE WOMAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH

The police never came.

Lorraine insisted David's death had been investigated.

But Andre didn't believe her.

Camille didn't either.

They spent the night in the library.

At 3:14 a.m., Andre found a second letter.

This one was addressed to Camille.

Her hands trembled as she opened it.

“Dear Camille,

If Andre ever discovers the truth, he will need someone who can withstand what comes next.

I believe that person is you.”

She looked up.

Andre read the next paragraph.

“Your father and I made an agreement twenty-two years ago. If anything happened to me, control of certain assets would pass outside the Callaway family.”

Camille frowned.

“What assets?”

The final page answered.

Fifty-one percent of Callaway Meridian.

Andre stared.

“That can't be possible.”

Camille turned the page.

A trust document was attached.

Her father's signature appeared beside David's.

The beneficiary:

Camille Bennett.

Andre sat down.

“My father gave you control of my company?”

“Apparently.”

“Why?”

“I don't know.”

A sound came from the hallway.

They both froze.

Camille quietly closed the box.

Andre reached for the phone.

Footsteps approached.

Then stopped.

The door handle moved.

Camille whispered:

“Don't open it.”

The handle moved again.

Andre stood.

The door suddenly opened.

Their CFO, Martin Hale, stood outside.

His face was pale.

“You found it.”

Andre stared.

“How did you know?”

Martin closed the door behind him.

“Because I helped your father create it.”

Camille stepped forward.

“Then tell us everything.”

Martin swallowed.

“Your mother knows.”

“About the trust?”

“About everything.”

“What everything?”

Martin looked at Andre.

“Your father discovered Lorraine was transferring company money into private accounts.”

Andre clenched his fists.

“Why didn't he stop her?”

“He tried.”

“What happened?”

Martin looked toward the window.

“He became sick.”

Camille's voice became quiet.

“Poison.”

Martin nodded.

“And after his death, Lorraine threatened everyone who knew.”

Andre whispered:

“Who poisoned him?”

Martin looked directly at him.

“I never saw the person.”

“Then who did?”

Martin hesitated.

“Your mother.”

The room went silent.

Then Martin added:

“But she wasn't alone.”
