Chapter 15 - The Baby Who Changed Everything

Three months later, Riverbend Children's Hospital looked almost the same.
But nothing felt the same to me.
The old maternity wing had been demolished.
The investigation had become national news.
The secret program had been exposed.
Dozens of families learned that records of their children had been altered.
Several people were arrested.
Adrian Vale disappeared before trial.
But the biggest mystery remained.
Rachel's son.
The boy listed as dead.
The boy whose name appeared on the original records.
We found him in a small town outside Minneapolis.
His name was Noah.
He was eleven years old.
And he had the same eyes as Emma.
Rachel broke down when she saw him.
She didn't care about the investigation.
She didn't care about the files.
She simply ran to her son.
Noah froze.
Then slowly hugged her.
Boone watched from a distance.
He had survived the shooting.
The scars remained.
The shaking remained.
But something inside him had changed.
He wasn't running anymore.
Neither was Rachel.
Neither was I.
And Emma?
She was thriving.
Five pounds.
Then six.
Then seven.
Her lungs strengthened.
Her cheeks filled out.
The baby who had once been abandoned inside a hospital now had a family so complicated that no television writer would dare invent it.
One afternoon, I walked into the NICU.
The room was quiet.
A new premature baby slept in bed seven.
A young mother sat beside him.
Her husband stood behind her.
Flowers covered the windowsill.
I smiled.
Then I heard a familiar voice.
“Still saving people?”
I turned.
Boone stood in the doorway.
He had a scar across his cheek now.
A cane in one hand.
Emma in the other.
She was almost three months old.
“You're late,” I said.
“I was told nurses are difficult.”
“We are.”
He smiled.
Emma reached toward me.
I took her.
For a moment, everything felt peaceful.
Then Boone's phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
His smile disappeared.
“What?”
He listened.
His expression hardened.
“Who?”
Silence.
Then:
“That's impossible.”
I looked at him.
“What happened?”
He ended the call.
“Vale was found.”
My stomach tightened.
“Alive?”
“Yes.”
“Where?”
Boone looked at Emma.
Then at Rachel's son standing beside the window.
“He wasn't alone.”
I felt cold.
“Who was with him?”
Boone handed me the phone.
There was a photograph on the screen.
Adrian Vale.
Standing beside a man.
A man I didn't recognize.
Until I saw the face.
My own face.
Older.
Harder.
But unmistakably me.
My blood turned to ice.
“That's…”
Boone nodded.
“Your father.”
I couldn't speak.
My father had died when I was fourteen.
At least, that was what my family had always told me.
Another message appeared.
YOU FOUND THE CHILDREN.
Then another.
NOW FIND THE FIRST ONE.
I looked at Emma.
Then Noah.
Then Boone.
And suddenly I understood.
The secret program hadn't started with Rachel.
It hadn't started with Emma.
It hadn't even started eleven years ago.
It had started decades earlier.
And somewhere in America was the first child.
The child who had survived the original experiment.
The child whose blood had created the entire program.
The child whose identity had been hidden from the world.
Boone looked at me.
“Claire…”
I couldn't take my eyes off the screen.
May you like
Because beneath the photograph was one final sentence.
THE FIRST CHILD IS YOU.
