Chapter 11 - Boone Mercer's Last Lie

Boone admitted the truth.
He had known Rachel was alive for three weeks.
He had spoken to her.
He had promised to bring Emma.
I felt betrayed.
“You used me.”
“I protected you.”
“You lied.”
“Yes.”
“You let me believe Rachel was dead.”
“I had to.”
“Why?”
“Because Rachel doesn't trust me anymore.”
I stared at him.
“Why?”
He looked away.
“Because I failed her.”
The truth was worse.
Eleven years ago, Boone had been ordered to escort Rachel to safety.
He never reached her.
The explosion that nearly killed him had been a trap.
Rachel believed he had betrayed her.
She disappeared.
And Boone spent eleven years trying to find her.
Then Rachel finally contacted him.
But she had one condition.
He could not tell anyone she was alive.
Not even me.
Until Emma was safe.
I looked at him.
“Where is she?”
“Chicago.”
We left that night.
But before we reached the airport, my phone rang.
Rachel.
“Claire?”
“Yes.”
Her voice broke.
“I need you to listen.”
“I am.”
“Boone can't come.”
“Why?”
“Because they're following him.”
I looked at Boone.
His face changed.
Rachel whispered:
“There's a mole inside Riverbend.”
The call ended.
We turned around.

And the hospital administrator was standing behind us.
