Vale finally told us why.
Rachel had discovered a secret medical program.
Children born to military families had been secretly monitored.
Some were given false identities.
Some were transferred.
And some were used in research.
Emma wasn't valuable because of her DNA.
She was valuable because Rachel had discovered the program and hidden proof inside her medical records.
But Vale wanted more.
He wanted the list of every child involved.
“Where is the list?” Boone asked.
Vale smiled.
“Claire has it.”
I stared at him.
“No.”
“Yes.”
He pointed to my necklace.
I touched it.
The necklace had belonged to my mother.
I'd worn it for twenty years.
Vale said,
“Open it.”
I did.
Inside was a tiny data chip.
My heart stopped.
“I've never seen this.”
“You don't remember putting it there.”
Boone looked at me.
“You were protecting it.”
Suddenly the basement door exploded open.
Police stormed inside.
Vale disappeared through the hidden passage.
We chased him.
But he was gone.
On the floor was his phone.
It contained one message.
