Chapter 13 - The Truth About Parker

Vale wasn't alone.

Three armed men stood behind him.

Rachel stepped forward.

“Let her go.”

Vale smiled.

“You still don't understand.”

He held Emma carefully.

“She was never the target.”

“Then what do you want?”

“The list.”

Rachel shook her head.

“It's gone.”

“No.”

Vale looked at me.

“Claire has it.”

I finally understood.

The necklace.

The chip.

The missing memories.

Everything connected.

But there was another truth.

The list wasn't stored on the chip.

The chip contained a key.

The actual information was inside my own memory.

That's why Vale had erased me.

That's why Rachel had trusted me.

I remembered the night of the fire.

Rachel had whispered:

“If they take the records, Claire will still remember.”

I had memorized everything.

Names.

Dates.

Children.

Locations.

Then Vale had captured me.

He had erased the memory through experimental treatment.

But the memories were coming back.

One piece at a time.

I looked at Vale.

“You need me alive.”

He smiled.

“Yes.”

“Then you can't kill Boone.”

His smile disappeared.

“You're negotiating?”

“No.”

I looked at Rachel.

“I'm stalling.”

Rachel understood.

She pulled the emergency lever.

The old sprinkler system exploded.

Water crashed from the ceiling.

The lights went out.

Boone moved.

Rachel moved.

I grabbed Emma.

And for the first time in eleven years, the people who had been running finally fought back.
