CHAPTER 4 — The Choice Between Revenge and Mercy

“Are you really better than me?”

Selene’s words sliced through the chaos.

The countdown glowed red on the tablet.

04:18

04:17

Screams filled the VIP lounge.

Guests rushed toward exits.

Security shouted orders.

Some cried.

Some prayed.

Some froze.

Victor fell to his knees, staring at the screen showing his father, Harold Langley, unconscious in a hospital bed.

“No… no… Dad…”

Elena’s body felt numb.

Her mind split in two.

One screen showed twelve bombs planted across the restaurant.

Hundreds of lives.

The other showed the man responsible for her father’s destruction.

The man whose greed shattered her childhood.

Harold Langley.

Selene smiled.

“Well?”

She tilted her head.

“Choose.”

Elena’s fists clenched.

“You’re sick.”

Selene shrugged.

“No.”

Her gaze sharpened.

“I’m honest.”

04:00

Alexander stepped forward.

“Selene, stop this.”

She laughed.

“You don’t get to order me.”

Daniel scanned the room, eyes hunting for bomb placements.

Three.

He spotted three.

Not enough.

Not nearly enough.

“Alexander,” he said sharply, “we need the trigger system.”

Alexander nodded.

He moved toward Selene.

She raised the remote.

“One more step and three detonators activate instantly.”

He stopped.

Selene looked only at Elena.

“Still deciding?”

Elena stared at Harold on the screen.

Memories flooded her.

Her father in the hospital.

Weak.

Dying.

His trembling hand in hers.

His voice.

Don’t become like them.

Tears burned behind her eyes.

Selene spoke softly.

“He deserves to die.”

Elena said nothing.

Selene moved closer.

“Say it.”

Silence.

“He ruined your father.”

Silence.

“He ruined your mother.”

Silence.

“He ruined you.”

Selene leaned near her ear.

“Let him burn.”

03:32

Victor crawled toward Elena.

His arrogance was gone.

Completely gone.

Only terror remained.

“Elena… please…”

She looked down at him.

His face was wet with tears.

The same man who had thrown coins at her.

The same man who mocked her pain.

Now begging.

“Please save him…”

Elena’s jaw tightened.

Victor sobbed.

“I know what my family did.”

His voice broke.

“I know I don’t deserve mercy.”

He grabbed her wrist.

“But he’s still my father.”

Tears streamed down his face.

“Please…”

Elena looked at him.

Then at the screen.

Then at Selene.

Selene’s smile widened.

“There it is.”

She spread her arms.

“The weakness.”

Elena whispered—

“No.”

Selene frowned.

“What?”

Elena slowly lifted her head.

Her eyes were no longer shaking.

They were steady.

Clear.

Powerful.

“I understand you now.”

Selene narrowed her eyes.

Elena stepped forward.

“You think compassion is weakness.”

Silence.

“You think mercy is surrender.”

Another step.

“You think pain gives you permission to become cruel.”

Selene’s smile faded.

Elena’s voice strengthened.

“But that’s the difference between us.”

02:59

Selene’s jaw tightened.

“And what difference is that?”

Elena answered.

“I suffered…”

A beat.

“But I refused to become a monster.”

Silence.

Selene’s eyes flashed with rage.

“You know NOTHING about suffering!”

She screamed.

“I was sold!”

The room froze.

Her voice shook with buried trauma.

“I was trafficked between men who treated children like property!”

Daniel stopped moving.

Alexander went pale.

Selene trembled—not with fear.

With fury.

“I learned hunger.”

She pointed at Elena.

“You learned heartbreak.”

Tears filled her eyes.

“I learned survival.”

Her voice cracked.

“You learned grief.”

She screamed.

“DON’T COMPARE US!”

Silence hit.

Heavy.

Painful.

Even Elena froze.

For the first time—

She saw not the villain.

But the child.

The stolen child.

The forgotten twin.

Selene laughed bitterly.

“Look at you.”

She wiped tears with anger.

“Pitying me?”

Elena whispered—

“No.”

Selene stared.

Elena’s voice softened.

“I’m mourning you.”

That hit harder than any slap.

Selene stopped breathing.

“What?”

Elena stepped closer.

“I’m mourning the sister I never got to know.”

Silence.

Selene shook.

“No.”

Elena’s eyes filled.

“They stole your childhood.”

Selene backed up.

“No.”

“They stole your safety.”

“No!”

“They stole your life.”

“STOP!”

Elena cried now.

“And I hate that I wasn’t there!”

The words shattered the room.

Selene froze.

Her hand trembled around the detonator.

Elena continued.

“I would have searched forever.”

Selene whispered—

“Liar…”

Elena shook her head.

“I would have.”

Selene’s breathing became unstable.

“No…”

“I would have loved you.”

“STOP!”

“I still can.”

Selene screamed—

“NO!”

She slammed the detonator tighter.

Daniel saw it.

Her grip.

Too much pressure.

Too unstable.

Danger.

“SELENE!”

Too late.

Her finger slipped.

Click.

A bomb activated.

Red light.

Ceiling pillar.

Left wing.

02:01

Daniel moved instantly.

He lunged.

Selene reacted.

She shoved Elena aside.

Daniel tackled Selene.

The remote flew.

Across marble.

Sliding.

Spinning.

Toward Victor.

Victor grabbed it.

Everyone froze.

Victor stared at it.

His breathing wild.

Selene screamed—

“DON’T TOUCH THAT!”

Victor looked at the screens.

His father.

The bombs.

His shaking hand.

Then—

Something changed.

He looked at Elena.

At Daniel.

At Alexander.

At Selene.

Then at himself.

The truth crushed him.

His family caused this.

His father caused this.

His cruelty helped create tonight.

Victor whispered—

“My whole life…”

Tears fell.

“…I protected evil.”

Selene struggled against Daniel.

“Give it back!”

Victor stood.

Shaking.

Broken.

But standing.

He looked at Elena.

“I can’t undo what we did.”

Silence.

“But maybe…”

He swallowed.

“…I can stop one more sin.”

Selene’s eyes widened.

“No.”

Victor looked at the tablet.

Then at Harold.

Then back.

He made his choice.

“No more innocent people die for my family.”

Selene screamed.

“NO!”

Victor pressed a sequence.

Emergency override.

Alexander’s eyes widened.

“How do you know that code?”

Victor answered—

“My father built military-grade fail-safes.”

He entered the final digit.

System processing.

Selene shrieked.

“NO!”

ACCESS GRANTED

Bombs deactivated.

All twelve.

Green lights.

Silence.

No explosions.

No screams.

Just breathing.

Heavy breathing.

Elena stared.

Saved.

Everyone saved.

Selene went still.

Then smiled.

Too calm.

Too calm.

Daniel noticed first.

No.

Something was wrong.

Very wrong.

Selene stopped fighting.

She laughed.

Softly.

Then louder.

Then hysterically.

Alexander’s blood froze.

He knew that laugh.

“Selene…”

She looked up.

Eyes shining with madness.

“You really thought…”

She giggled.

“…those were the real bombs?”

Silence.

Daniel’s stomach dropped.

No.

No.

Selene smiled at Elena.

“That was test one.”

Elena whispered—

“What?”

Selene’s smile became terrifying.

“The real bomb…”

She touched her chest.

“…is here.”

Elena froze.

Vest.

Under the dress.

Explosives.

Strapped to Selene’s body.

Alexander’s face lost color.

“No.”

Selene laughed.

“Oh yes.”

She pressed a second device hidden in her palm.

New countdown.

00:45

Chaos returned.

Screams.

Panic.

Daniel released her.

No way to disarm in time.

Alexander stepped forward.

“Selene!”

She ignored him.

Only looked at Elena.

“Final choice, sister.”

00:37

Elena whispered—

“What do you want?”

Selene smiled through tears.

“One thing.”

“Anything.”

Selene’s voice broke.

“Tell me…”

Her lips trembled.

“…if I had stayed…”

Tears rolled down.

“…would mother have loved me?”

Silence.

The question was no longer from a criminal mastermind.

It came from the stolen child.

The abandoned daughter.

The twin who never healed.

Elena walked toward her.

Daniel shouted—

“NO!”

Alexander too.

“Elena!”

She ignored them.

Step by step.

Toward death.

Toward her sister.

Selene cried.

“DON’T COME CLOSER!”

Elena kept walking.

00:20

Selene shook violently.

“I’ll kill us both!”

Elena answered softly.

“No.”

Another step.

“She would have loved you.”

Selene sobbed.

“No…”

“She would have fought for you.”

“No…”

“She would have held you.”

Selene collapsed to her knees.

“No…”

Elena knelt before her.

Both women crying.

Mirror images.

Two lives.

Two fates.

One blood.

Elena placed a trembling hand on Selene’s cheek.

And whispered—

“She never stopped loving you.”

Selene shattered.

Years of rage.

Hatred.

Violence.

Pain.

All cracked at once.

She cried like a child.

Not a monster.

Not a mastermind.

Just a broken daughter.

A broken sister.

“I wanted… someone to choose me…”

Elena pulled her into an embrace.

“I choose you.”

Silence.

Pure silence.

Selene stopped resisting.

The timer kept moving.

00:09

Daniel’s eyes widened.

No.

No!

Alexander moved.

Too slow.

Selene weakly lifted the detonator.

Placed it in Elena’s hand.

Her voice faded.

“There’s… one way…”

Elena looked down.

Override command.

Biometric lock.

Only Selene’s fingerprint.

Selene pressed her thumb.

System accepted.

Manual transfer initiated

Elena whispered—

“What are you doing?”

Selene smiled sadly.

“For once…”

Tears fell.

“…I want to save something.”

Timer:

00:03

Alexander screamed—

“SELENE!”

Selene shoved Elena backward.

Hard.

Into Daniel’s arms.

00:02

Selene looked at Elena.

And smiled.

Not cruel.

Not broken.

Peaceful.

Like the sister she might have been.

“Live enough for both of us.”

00:01

Flash.

White light.

Explosion.

May you like

Blackout.

To be continued…
