Chapter 14 - THE COUNTERATTACK

The federal building became a command center.
Agents filled conference rooms.
Computers displayed account transfers.
Maps covered the walls.
My father's files were spread across tables.
And for the first time, I wasn't treated like a victim.
I was treated like a witness.
A key witness.
The investigators discovered something astonishing.
The transfer wasn't real.
It was designed to make us believe the trust had been stolen.
My husband wanted me to panic.
But the real target was somewhere else.
A shell company.
One that controlled dozens of properties.
Including the building where his company operated.
Detective Brooks pointed at the screen.
“He's moving everything.”
“Where?”
“Mexico.”
“Can we stop him?”
“We're trying.”
I stared at the map.
Then I remembered my father's words.
Everything Hale owns is connected through one structure.
I looked at the files.
“Wait.”
Brooks turned.
“What?”
“There's another account.”
She frowned.
“How do you know?”
“My father mentioned it.”
We searched.
Nothing.
Then Robert looked at me.
“Your father's private ledger.”
I opened the last box.
Inside was a handwritten notebook.
Page after page of numbers.
At first they meant nothing.
Then I noticed the pattern.
Dates.
Amounts.
Locations.
I matched them with the company records.
They were transfers.
But not outgoing.
Incoming.
Money had been flowing into my husband's company from Hale's organization for years.
And one account appeared repeatedly.
A trust account.
Not mine.
His mother's.
I looked at Brooks.
“She knew.”
Brooks nodded.
“She probably knew everything.”
We obtained a warrant.
Within hours, agents searched the mother's house.
They found hidden cash.
Fake passports.
Encrypted drives.
And photographs of me.
Sleeping.
Shopping.
Driving.
Pregnant.
My skin crawled.
Then they found something else.
A room.
A hidden room.
Inside were documents describing my movements.
My medical appointments.
My doctor's name.
The baby's expected due date.
Someone had been monitoring my pregnancy.
Brooks called me.
“We found enough evidence to charge his mother.”
“And Mara?”
“We're reviewing her role.”
“What about Daniel?”
“He's cooperating.”
“And Jessica?”
“She gave us everything.”
I closed my eyes.
The network was collapsing.
But my husband was still missing.
Then an agent rushed into the room.
“We found him.”
I stood.
“Where?”
“Private airfield outside Detroit.”
“Is he arrested?”
The agent shook his head.
“He's getting on a plane.”
Brooks grabbed her coat.
“Let's go.”
The chase lasted forty minutes.
When we reached the airfield, the plane was already moving.
Agents blocked the runway.
The plane stopped.
The door opened.
My husband stepped out.
Hands raised.
For a moment, he looked directly at me.
He smiled.
Not fearfully.
Almost peacefully.
“You came.”
I stared at him.
“You tried to kill me.”
He shook his head.
“No.”
“You buried me.”
“That wasn't supposed to happen.”
My blood ran cold.
“What wasn't supposed to happen?”
He stepped forward.
“The baby.”
Brooks raised her weapon.
“Stop.”
My husband looked at my stomach.
Then at me.
“You still don't understand.”
“Understand what?”
His smile disappeared.
“Your father wasn't trying to protect you from me.”
I frowned.
“He was trying to protect you from what he knew about himself.”
Silence.
“What are you talking about?”
My husband laughed softly.
“You think I'm the monster?”
He glanced toward Detective Brooks.
“You have no idea who your father really was.”
Then he was arrested.
But his final words followed me long after the handcuffs closed around his wrists.
May you like
Because for the first time, I wondered whether my father's letter had told me the whole truth.
Or only the part he wanted me to know.
