Chapter 11 - THE MAN WHO WALKED OUT

I stared at the message until the words blurred.

You should have stayed in the dirt.

Detective Brooks took my phone.

“Don't respond.”

“I wasn't going to.”

She studied the screen.

“Whoever sent this wants you scared.”

“They already succeeded.”

She looked at me.

“No.”

Her voice was firm.

“They succeeded when you thought you had no choices.”

I swallowed.

“What now?”

“We move you.”

“To where?”

“Somewhere your husband can't find.”

I shook my head.

“No.”

She frowned.

“I don't want to run anymore.”

“You're not running.”

“Then what am I doing?”

“Surviving.”

I looked at the boxes my father had left behind.

The photographs.

The financial records.

The names.

The evidence.

“I want to fight.”

Detective Brooks studied me for several seconds.

Then she nodded.

“Then we're going to do this carefully.”

We spent the next three hours securing every document.

My father's attorney was contacted.

The trust was immediately frozen.

Every account connected to my husband was flagged.

The prosecutor filed emergency motions.

And then we received the worst news.

My husband was no longer at the courthouse.

He had disappeared.

His attorney claimed he had been released.

The court clerk insisted no such order existed.

Someone had fabricated the document.

Someone had impersonated the judge.

That meant this wasn't simply a domestic case anymore.

It was organized.

At midnight, I was moved to a safe location.

The house was small.

Plain.

Protected.

For the first time, there were no expensive paintings or marble floors.

Just white walls and a kitchen table.

I sat there with both hands around a cup of tea.

Then my stomach moved.

I smiled.

“Still with me?”

A small kick answered.

I closed my eyes.

“I've got you.”

My phone rang.

Detective Brooks.

“We found one of his cars.”

“Where?”

“Airport parking.”

I stood.

“He's leaving the country?”

“We don't know.”

“Then where is he?”

Silence.

“There's something else.”

“What?”

“He left a note.”

My heart tightened.

“What does it say?”

Detective Brooks hesitated.

“It says your baby isn't his.”

I stopped breathing.

“What?”

“He claims the child belongs to someone else.”

I laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because I finally understood.

He was trying to create another story.

Another lie.

Another weapon.

“Is there evidence?”

“Not yet.”

“Then it's a lie.”

“We think so.”

“Think?”

Detective Brooks sighed.

“We'll run the tests.”

I stared at the wall.

My husband had tried to convince everyone I was unstable.

Now he was trying to convince them I had betrayed him.

He wanted doubt.

Because doubt was his favorite weapon.

I whispered:

“He's scared.”

“How do you know?”

“Because he's changing the story.”

Detective Brooks said nothing.

I looked down at my stomach.

“He knows the truth is winning.”

Then the lights went out.

The entire safe house went dark.

Detective Brooks immediately shouted:

“Get down!”

I dropped behind the table.

Outside, tires screeched.

Then came a single gunshot.

The window shattered.

And someone whispered from the hallway:

“Run.”
