Chapter 13 - THE VAULT

Chicago was cold when we arrived.
Federal agents escorted us into an underground parking garage.
The man waiting there was older than I expected.
Gray hair.
Broad shoulders.
A scar above one eyebrow.
“My name is Robert Hayes.”
He handed me a small envelope.
Inside was a brass key.
No label.
No number.
Just one word engraved on it.
BENNETT.
“My maiden name,” I whispered.
“Your father wanted it that way.”
“Why?”
“Because your husband only knew you as Mrs. Carter.”
I stared at the key.
“What is inside?”
Robert looked at Detective Brooks.
“Something your father never trusted anyone else with.”
The vault was hidden beneath an old bank building.
The door required three keys.
Robert had one.
Detective Brooks had obtained the second through a federal warrant.
Mine was the third.
When the door opened, I expected money.
Instead, I found shelves.
Files.
Hard drives.
Photographs.
Boxes.
And one enormous steel cabinet.
Robert pointed.
“That.”
I approached.
The cabinet opened with my fingerprint.
Inside was a single video recorder.
A screen.
A button.
I pressed it.
My father appeared.
Older.
Tired.
Alive.
My breath caught.
“Hello, sweetheart.”
I covered my mouth.
His voice continued.
“If you're seeing this, then my worst fear came true.”
Tears filled my eyes.
“I need you to listen carefully.”
The video showed my father sitting in his office.
“There are people around you who will pretend to love you.”
He looked directly into the camera.
“They are not all enemies.”
A pause.
“And they are not all friends.”
I glanced at Brooks.
My father continued.
“Your husband is dangerous, but he is not the architect.”
I froze.
“The architect?”
My father leaned closer.
“He answers to someone else.”
The screen changed.
A photograph appeared.
A man.
I recognized him instantly.
The developer from the surveillance photo.
Victor Hale.
My father's former business partner.
The man suspected of money laundering.
My father continued.
“Hale built an organization that moves money through legitimate companies.”
He named corporations.
Banks.
Investment firms.
Real estate groups.
My husband's company was one of them.
Then came the sentence that changed everything.
“Your husband married you because Hale needed access to your trust.”
My knees weakened.
I grabbed the table.
My father looked devastated.
“I failed to protect you.”
I cried.
“But you must understand something.”
He leaned toward the camera.
“You are not powerless.”
The screen displayed a list.
Accounts.
Properties.
Companies.
Names.
“Everything Hale owns is connected through one structure.”
The final file opened.
A document titled:
THE MERCER NETWORK
My father said:
“Destroy the network, and you destroy them.”
The screen went black.
I stood frozen.
Detective Brooks stared at the documents.
Robert whispered:
“Your father spent years preparing this.”
Then a printer suddenly started.
Everyone jumped.
A single sheet emerged.
I picked it up.
It contained one sentence.
TRANSFER COMPLETE.
Brooks looked at me.
“What transfer?”
I checked the attached account number.
My blood went cold.
It was the trust.
Someone had accessed it.
Despite the freeze.
Brooks immediately called headquarters.
Then she looked at me.
“They've taken control.”
I stared at the paper.
“How?”
She shook her head.
“We're about to find out.”
My phone buzzed.
A message appeared.
May you like
From my husband.
You wanted a war. Now you'll get one.
