Chapter 6 - The Man Claire Hid

By sunset, Daniel was back at Willow Creek Ranch.
Margaret remained in sheriff custody.
Grace slept safely between Emma and a pediatric nurse during the drive.
Daniel entered the house expecting another betrayal.
Instead, he saw an old man sitting handcuffed in the library.
He was thin.
White-haired.
Seventy, perhaps.
Blood stained his sleeve where Mark had grazed him with a bullet after the intruder fired first.
Daniel had never seen him before.
But the old man looked at him and said:
“You have Claire’s eyes when you’re angry.”
Daniel stopped.
“Who are you?”
The old man smiled sadly.
“My name is Henry Vale.”
Emma inhaled sharply.
Victor’s father.
The man at the center of everything.
Daniel crossed the room before anyone could stop him.
“You killed my wife.”
Henry didn’t flinch.
“No.”
“You built the system that killed her.”
“That is closer to the truth.”
Daniel wanted to hit him.
Instead, he stood inches away.
“Why are you in my house?”
“To destroy what Claire found.”
Sheriff Briggs entered.
“Thank you for confessing in front of witnesses.”
Henry gave him a tired glance.
“I’m seventy-four years old. Confession is becoming less frightening than memory.”
Daniel’s voice was ice.
“Talk.”
Henry leaned back.
“Thirty years ago, I convinced myself I was doing important work.”
“Illegal genetic experiments.”
“Yes.”
“On unborn children.”
Henry looked down.
“On embryos.”
Emma stepped forward.
“My mother worked for you.”
Henry’s expression changed when he saw her.
“Evelyn’s daughter.”
“You knew her?”
“Better than I deserved to.”
Emma’s hands curled.
“Did you hurt her?”
“No.”
“Did Victor?”
Henry hesitated.
Emma’s face tightened.
“Answer me.”
“Victor found her years later.”
Emma’s eyes filled with anger.
“He came to our apartment when I was fourteen.”
Daniel turned.
Emma had never mentioned that.
She continued.
“My mother told me he was a debt collector.”
Henry closed his eyes.
“He was looking for records.”
“After that we moved three times.”
Henry nodded.
“She was protecting you.”
Emma whispered, “From him?”
“From all of us.”
Daniel looked at Henry.
“Why did Victor take a job here?”
“Because Margaret married into Claire’s family. Claire became connected to the experiment.”
“That still doesn’t explain twelve years.”
Henry looked toward the window.
“My son believes my work was stolen from me.”
Daniel almost laughed.
“It was criminal.”
“He doesn’t care.”
Henry’s voice became hollow.
“Victor grew up hearing me complain that cowardly regulators destroyed my career. He turned my bitterness into religion.”
Daniel stared.
“And the stolen money?”
“To finance private research.”
Henry nodded.
“Victor created shell companies. Paid laboratories. Bought equipment.”
“Using my money.”
“Yes.”
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“And Claire discovered it.”
“Eventually.”
Emma asked, “Did you tell Victor to kill her?”
Henry looked at her.
“No.”
Daniel struck the desk with his palm.
“Stop protecting him!”
“I’m not.”
Henry’s voice rose.
“I begged him to stop.”
The room went silent.
“He stopped listening to me years ago. Claire found one of his laboratories. She photographed documents. He panicked.”
Daniel’s voice shook.
“He drugged her.”
“Yes.”
“Cut her brakes.”
Henry closed his eyes.
“Yes.”
Daniel turned away.
He could barely breathe.
Emma stepped near him without touching him.
Just present.
Daniel eventually looked back.
“What is Malcolm Reed’s role?”
Henry’s face changed.
“Malcolm is worse.”
Sheriff Briggs leaned forward.
“Explain.”
“Dr. Malcolm Reed was my research assistant.”
Daniel stared.
“He would have been young.”
“Nineteen when he started.”
Henry gave a bitter smile.
“Brilliant. Ruthless. He thought medicine was wasted on ethics.”
Emma whispered, “And now he’s a neonatal specialist.”
“Yes.”
Daniel looked toward Grace sleeping upstairs.
“He’s been near my daughters.”
“That is why I came tonight.”
Daniel’s eyes narrowed.
“You expect me to believe you were trying to help?”
“I expect nothing.”
Henry looked exhausted.
“Victor called me after his arrest.”
“How?”
“He had a second phone.”
Daniel cursed.
“What did he say?”
“That Malcolm was moving ahead.”
“With what?”
Henry looked directly at him.
“He wants Grace.”
The room seemed to tilt.
“Why?”
“For proof.”
“We already have her DNA.”
“No.”
Henry shook his head.
“For continuation.”
Daniel’s face hardened.
“Continuation of what?”
“The experiment.”
Emma went pale.
Daniel stepped toward Henry.
“She is six months old.”
“I know.”
“What does Malcolm intend to do?”
“Collect stem cells. Tissue samples. Possibly bone marrow later.”
Daniel’s voice dropped.
“Would it hurt her?”
Henry didn’t answer quickly enough.
Daniel lunged.
Briggs and Mark pulled him back.
“You let that man into my home!”
“I came to stop him!”
Henry shouted.
“My greatest sin is that I created men who believe curiosity excuses cruelty.”
Silence followed.
Then Mark’s phone rang.
He answered.
“Go.”
His face changed.
“When?”
Daniel looked at him.
“What?”
Mark lowered the phone.
“The hospital.”
Daniel felt dread.
“What about it?”
“Dr. Malcolm Reed signed in forty minutes ago.”
Daniel’s face went white.
“Lily and Sophie.”
They ran.
The drive to Lexington felt endless.
State police reached the hospital first.
Daniel entered the pediatric floor at a sprint.
Sophie’s room was empty.
Lily’s room was empty.
A nurse was unconscious behind the station.
Emma covered her mouth.
“No.”
Security reviewed footage.
Malcolm Reed appeared wearing hospital scrubs.
He had used legitimate credentials.
He transferred both babies into covered medical bassinets.
A second person helped him.
Daniel stared at the screen.
“Pause.”
The image froze.
The accomplice wore a surgical mask.
But the eyes were familiar.
Emma stepped closer.
“Rachel?”
Daniel stared.
It looked like her.
Sheriff Briggs called the ranch.
Rachel Bennett was gone.
Again.
But this time there were no signs of struggle.
Her belongings were missing.
Her phone was switched off.
Daniel felt betrayal burn through him.
“She was part of it.”
Emma shook her head.
“Maybe.”
“Maybe?”
“Rachel warned me.”
“She also knew where Claire’s key was.”
“And Victor nearly killed her.”
Daniel stared at her.
“Unless that was staged.”
Emma fell silent.
It was possible.
That was the worst part.
Everything was possible now.
Henry was brought to the hospital in police custody.
He studied the security footage.
“That’s Rachel.”
Daniel turned.
“You know her?”
Henry’s face became grim.
“Her last name isn’t Bennett.”
Daniel felt cold.
“What is it?”
“Reed.”
Emma’s eyes widened.
Henry looked at them.
“Rachel is Malcolm’s daughter.”
The revelation hit Daniel like a physical blow.
The nurse who had helped Emma.
The woman Claire trusted.
The woman supposedly tied in Victor’s cellar.
Malcolm’s daughter.
Daniel grabbed Henry’s shirt.
“You knew?”
“Not until I saw her.”
Daniel shoved him away.
“Where would Malcolm take my daughters?”
Henry shook his head.
“I don’t know.”
Emma looked at the hospital video.
“Rachel is carrying Sophie.”
Something bothered her.
She replayed it.
Then again.
Daniel watched.
“What?”
“Look at Rachel’s left hand.”
A small piece of white material protruded from her fingers.
Paper.
Emma zoomed in.
“She dropped something.”
Hospital security searched the corridor.
They found a folded medication label beneath a bench.
On the back, someone had written three words in pen.
BLACK CREEK FARM
Sheriff Briggs frowned.
“Is that a location?”
Henry looked terrified.
“Yes.”
Daniel turned.
“What is it?”
May you like
Henry’s answer chilled everyone in the room.
“The laboratory Victor built with your money.”
