Chapter 5 - Claire’s Mother

Daniel did not remember running down the stairs.

He remembered only the empty bassinet.

The open window.

And Claire’s warning repeating inside his head.

Do not let my mother take Grace.

Mark shouted orders into his radio.

Sheriff Briggs sealed every road surrounding the ranch.

Emma ran into the nursery behind Daniel.

“Where are Lily and Sophie?”

“Hospital transport already took them.”

“Good.”

Daniel turned toward the nurse.

Megan Parker stood against the wall, sobbing.

“What happened?”

“I stepped into the bathroom for thirty seconds.”

“You left Grace alone?”

“She was sleeping.”

“Who opened the window?”

“I don’t know.”

Daniel’s anger exploded.

“You don’t know?”

Emma stepped between them.

“Daniel.”

He stopped.

Megan was terrified.

Fear would not produce answers.

Emma crouched beside her.

“Think. What did you hear?”

Megan wiped her face.

“A cart.”

“What kind?”

“Laundry, maybe.”

“Before or after you went into the bathroom?”

“Before.”

“Did you smell anything?”

Megan blinked.

“What?”

“Perfume. Cleaning chemicals. Food. Anything unusual.”

Megan stared at her.

Then slowly nodded.

“Gardenia.”

Daniel froze.

Margaret’s perfume.

She had worn the same fragrance for twenty years.

Sheriff Briggs entered.

“We have a vehicle.”

Daniel turned.

“Where?”

“Traffic camera caught Margaret’s Lexus heading east nine minutes ago.”

“Grace?”

“Can’t see inside.”

Daniel grabbed his keys.

Briggs blocked him.

“You ride with me.”

Daniel didn’t argue.

Emma followed.

“You’re staying here,” Daniel said.

“No.”

“This isn’t your fight.”

Emma looked at him.

“It became my fight when Victor put a gun against my head.”

Daniel had no answer.

They drove east.

State police established checkpoints.

Margaret’s phone remained off.

Then Daniel remembered something.

“The lake house.”

Briggs looked over.

“What lake house?”

“Claire’s family owns an old property near Green River.”

“Address?”

Daniel gave it.

Twenty-eight minutes later, police vehicles stopped half a mile away.

Daniel, Briggs, and two officers approached on foot.

Emma remained inside the command vehicle only because Daniel insisted.

The lake house looked abandoned.

Curtains closed.

Dock empty.

No lights.

Briggs knocked.

“Margaret Sinclair! Sheriff’s department!”

Silence.

They entered.

The front room was empty.

But Daniel heard a baby crying upstairs.

“Grace.”

He ran before Briggs could stop him.

Margaret sat in an upstairs bedroom holding Grace.

A suitcase lay open.

Documents covered the bed.

A passport.

Cash.

Baby formula.

Daniel stopped in the doorway.

“Give me my daughter.”

Margaret looked exhausted.

Not crazed.

Not angry.

Just defeated.

“You shouldn’t have come.”

Daniel’s voice shook.

“You kidnapped my child.”

“I’m trying to save her.”

“From who?”

Margaret looked behind him at the sheriff.

“Not here.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“Give her to me.”

Margaret tightened her arms around Grace.

“Daniel, there are things Claire never told you.”

“Claire warned me about you.”

Pain crossed Margaret’s face.

“I know.”

“She said not to let you take Grace.”

“I know.”

“Why?”

Margaret began crying.

“Because she misunderstood.”

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“That excuse is getting old.”

Margaret looked at Grace.

“Victor was not supposed to hurt Claire.”

Daniel’s entire body hardened.

“You knew?”

“I knew he was frightening her.”

“You knew he was drugging her?”

“No!”

Grace began crying harder.

Margaret rocked her.

Daniel stepped closer.

“Give her to me.”

This time, Margaret did.

Daniel held his daughter against his chest.

The moment felt so overwhelming he nearly collapsed.

Briggs handcuffed Margaret.

She did not resist.

Downstairs, officers searched the house.

Emma entered once the building was secured.

Grace immediately reached toward her.

Daniel noticed.

He let Emma hold her.

Margaret watched.

“That’s the girl.”

Emma looked at her.

“What girl?”

Margaret’s eyes narrowed.

“You’re Evelyn Carter’s daughter.”

Emma went completely still.

Daniel turned.

“You know her mother?”

Margaret stared at Emma as if seeing a ghost.

“Of course I do.”

Emma’s face drained.

“My mother died when I was fifteen.”

Margaret looked genuinely startled.

“Evelyn is dead?”

“Cancer.”

Margaret sank into a chair.

“Oh God.”

Daniel stepped closer.

“What does Emma’s mother have to do with Claire?”

Margaret covered her face.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then she whispered, “Everything.”

Sheriff Briggs began recording.

Margaret looked up.

“Thirty years ago, I worked for a fertility clinic.”

Daniel frowned.

Claire had been born thirty-two years earlier.

Margaret continued.

“I was twenty-three. Broke. Newly married. I handled patient records.”

Emma looked uneasy.

“What clinic?”

“St. Catherine’s Reproductive Center.”

Emma’s expression changed.

“My mother worked there.”

Margaret nodded.

“She was a lab assistant.”

Daniel stared between them.

Margaret continued.

“There was a doctor named Henry Vale.”

“Hale?” Daniel asked.

“No. Vale. Different spelling.”

“What happened?”

“He ran illegal embryo experiments before regulations caught up. Genetic screening. donor substitutions. Anything wealthy clients would pay for privately.”

Emma looked horrified.

“My mother knew?”

“She discovered records had been altered.”

Margaret’s hands shook.

“So did I.”

Daniel listened.

“One patient was my sister.”

Claire’s aunt.

“She couldn’t conceive. Dr. Vale arranged treatment. Something went wrong.”

Margaret’s voice cracked.

“My sister died after complications.”

Daniel had heard Claire mention an aunt who died young.

Margaret continued.

“Evelyn and I tried to expose the clinic. But records disappeared. Dr. Vale vanished. We thought it was over.”

“Where does Victor fit?”

Margaret looked at Daniel.

“Victor’s real name isn’t Victor Hale.”

Daniel felt the air leave the room.

“What?”

“He was born Victor Vale.”

Silence.

“Dr. Henry Vale’s son.”

Emma whispered, “That’s why my mother changed towns constantly.”

Margaret nodded.

“Victor believed Evelyn had evidence that could destroy his father.”

Daniel stared.

“And Claire?”

“She found the connection.”

Margaret’s voice trembled.

“She realized Victor had taken the ranch job years earlier because he knew who I was.”

Daniel’s hands tightened around Grace.

“He targeted my family for twelve years?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“To find one thing.”

Margaret pointed toward Grace.

“A genetic marker.”

Daniel felt sick.

“What marker?”

Margaret took a long breath.

“The clinic performed experimental embryo procedures involving several families. They believed one altered gene could be passed down through daughters.”

Dr. Reese had mentioned no dangerous hereditary condition.

Daniel shook his head.

“This sounds insane.”

“It was.”

“Then why Grace?”

“Because prenatal testing showed she carries the marker.”

Emma looked at the baby.

“What does it do?”

“Nothing.”

Everyone stared.

Margaret laughed bitterly.

“That’s the horror of it. Nothing useful. Nothing dangerous. It was a failed experiment from three decades ago.”

Daniel stared at her.

“Then why does Victor care?”

“Because if Grace’s DNA is independently tested, it proves the illegal program existed.”

“And his father?”

“Still alive.”

Daniel felt another shock.

“Where?”

Margaret hesitated.

“I don’t know.”

Sheriff Briggs leaned forward.

“But Victor does.”

Margaret nodded.

Daniel struggled to process everything.

“You helped Victor.”

Margaret lowered her eyes.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“He contacted me after Claire became suspicious.”

Daniel’s voice became colder.

“And you chose him over your daughter.”

“No.”

Margaret looked up fiercely.

“He threatened to kill Claire.”

“He did kill Claire.”

Tears spilled down Margaret’s face.

“I thought if I gave him access to records, he would leave her alone.”

Daniel stared at her with disgust.

“You helped him drug Grace.”

“No.”

“The messages.”

“That wasn’t me.”

Daniel paused.

“M.”

Margaret shook her head.

“Victor called me Margaret. Never M.”

Emma looked at Briggs.

“So there is still another person.”

Margaret’s face changed.

“What messages?”

Daniel explained.

She turned pale.

“Oh no.”

“What?”

Margaret stood despite the handcuffs.

“Daniel, who arranged the triplets’ private medical team?”

“Victor.”

“No. Who recommended the agency?”

Daniel thought.

A specialist had contacted him after Claire’s death.

A highly respected neonatal consultant.

Dr. Malcolm Reed.

Daniel’s blood ran cold.

“M.”

Margaret whispered, “Malcolm.”

Sheriff Briggs immediately made a call.

No answer.

Then Daniel’s phone vibrated.

A notification from the ranch security system.

Someone had accessed the nursery archive.

Seconds later, every camera at Willow Creek went black.

Mark called.

“Daniel, we’ve got an intruder.”

“Who?”

“We’re checking.”

“Lily and Sophie?”

“Still at the hospital.”

Daniel exhaled.

Then Mark said, “But someone just entered Claire’s locked study.”

Daniel stared at Emma.

“Malcolm?”

Mark went silent.

Then:

“No.”

Daniel heard shouting through the phone.

A crash.

A gunshot.

“Mark!”

More shouting.

Then Mark’s voice returned.

“We have the intruder.”

Daniel gripped the phone.

“Who is it?”

Mark sounded stunned.

“Daniel…”

May you like

“What?”

“You’re going to want to see this yourself.”
