CHAPTER 4 — A Father’s Choice

Rain poured like the sky was breaking apart.

Adrian’s black car cut through the highway at terrifying speed.

Beside him, Claire monitored the GPS signal from Sebastian’s message.

The blinking red dot stayed fixed.

Warehouse 17.

No movement.

No signal disruption.

Too clean.

Too obvious.

Claire’s voice was tense.

“He wants us there.”

Adrian gripped the steering wheel harder.

“I know.”

“That means he controls the battlefield.”

Adrian’s eyes remained forward.

“Then we change the rules.”

Claire looked at him.

There was something different about Adrian now.

Hours ago he had been a billionaire fighting betrayal.

Now—

He was a father going to war.

Nothing was more dangerous.

They arrived at the abandoned docks.

Thunder rolled across the sky.

Warehouse 17 stood in darkness.

Massive steel doors.

No guards outside.

No cameras visible.

Too quiet.

Claire whispered.

“I don’t like this.”

Adrian checked his gun.

Neither did he.

Then—

His phone buzzed.

A video.

Live feed.

Lily.

She sat in a chair under bright white lights.

Her small hands rested in her lap.

No restraints.

No visible injuries.

But her eyes widened the moment she saw the camera.

“Daddy…”

Adrian’s chest tightened.

“I’m here.”

She whispered.

“They’re watching.”

Then the feed cut.

Doors opened.

Creeeak.

A voice echoed from inside.

Smooth.

Controlled.

Elegant.

“Welcome, Adrian.”

Sebastian.

Adrian entered.

Claire close behind.

Lights flickered on.

Rows of computers.

Servers.

Medical equipment.

Massive monitors.

This wasn’t a warehouse.

It was a laboratory.

At the center—

Lily sat in the white chair.

Adrian moved.

“Lily!”

She looked up.

“Daddy!”

Before he reached her—

CLICK.

Red laser dots appeared across Adrian’s chest.

Then Claire’s.

Snipers.

Dozens.

Sebastian stepped from the shadows.

Black suit.

Perfect posture.

A faint smile.

No fear.

No urgency.

As if this were a business meeting.

Sebastian slowly applauded.

“Impressive.”

He looked at Adrian.

“You came anyway.”

Adrian’s voice was ice.

“Let her go.”

Sebastian tilted his head.

“Straight to negotiation.”

Claire glared.

“You’re finished.”

Sebastian smiled.

“Am I?”

He walked toward Lily.

She flinched.

Adrian’s body tensed.

“Don’t touch her.”

Sebastian stopped.

Then looked at Adrian.

A strange curiosity in his eyes.

“You truly believe she’s yours.”

Adrian said nothing.

Sebastian continued.

“Even after the DNA file.”

Silence.

Claire’s heartbeat spiked.

He knew.

Of course he knew.

Sebastian smiled.

“Sophia always chose emotional men.”

Adrian stepped forward.

Lasers tightened.

Still he moved.

Sebastian frowned.

“Stop.”

Adrian didn’t.

“Stop.”

Adrian’s voice cut through the room.

“I said one thing.”

Another step.

“Let.”

Step.

“Her.”

Step.

“Go.”

Sebastian’s smile faded.

Interesting.

No fear.

No hesitation.

Adrian kept walking despite the rifles.

Sebastian studied him.

Then laughed softly.

“So this is love.”

Adrian stopped only when he stood a few feet away.

Sebastian asked calmly—

“Do you want truth?”

Adrian replied.

“I want my daughter.”

Sebastian’s eyes sharpened.

“There.”

He smiled.

“That word again.”

“Daughter.”

He turned toward Lily.

“She has my blood.”

Adrian answered immediately.

“She has my heart.”

Silence.

Even the guards looked uneasy.

Sebastian narrowed his eyes.

Adrian continued.

“You think biology makes a father?”

He laughed once.

Cold.

Humorless.

“No.”

He pointed at Lily.

“A father stays.”

“A father protects.”

“A father bleeds.”

His voice deepened.

“You donated DNA.”

“I raised a child.”

The words hit harder than bullets.

Lily’s eyes filled with tears.

“Daddy…”

Adrian looked at her.

His expression softened instantly.

“Yes, sweetheart.”

She cried.

“I was scared.”

Adrian’s voice broke.

“I know.”

“But I’m here now.”

Lily sobbed.

“Don’t leave me.”

Adrian answered without hesitation.

“Never.”

Something changed in Sebastian’s face.

His jaw tightened.

Not anger.

Something darker.

Jealousy.

Pain.

No.

Worse.

Loss.

Claire noticed.

Then she understood.

Sebastian didn’t merely want Lily as an experiment.

Some part of him wanted to be chosen.

Wanted to be called father.

Wanted what Adrian had naturally.

That made him dangerous.

Sebastian spoke quietly.

“She would surpass us all.”

Adrian said nothing.

Sebastian walked to the main monitor.

Pressed a button.

A brain scan appeared.

Neural pathways.

Patterns.

Impossible complexity.

“This is Lily’s brain activity.”

Claire stared.

Even she felt cold.

Sebastian’s voice became reverent.

“She processes patterns 400% faster than elite adults.”

“She predicts behavior.”

“She recognizes environmental anomalies.”

“She learns adaptive systems intuitively.”

He turned.

“She is the future.”

Adrian replied.

“She is a child.”

Sebastian smiled sadly.

“No.”

He looked at Lily.

“She stopped being ordinary before birth.”

Lily clutched her teddy bear.

Confused.

Afraid.

She whispered.

“I want Mommy.”

Silence.

Adrian’s heart shattered.

Claire looked down.

Sebastian’s face changed.

For the first time—

Emotion.

Real emotion.

“She looked like Sophia.”

He said it almost unconsciously.

Adrian’s gaze sharpened.

“What did you say?”

Sebastian froze.

Too late.

Adrian saw it.

The truth.

Not obsession.

Love.

Twisted.

Broken.

But real.

Sebastian loved Sophia.

Adrian whispered.

“You loved her.”

Sebastian laughed.

A short bitter laugh.

“She understood me.”

“No.”

Adrian interrupted.

“She feared you.”

Sebastian’s eyes darkened.

“She betrayed me.”

“She escaped you.”

“She stole Lily.”

“She stole everything!”

His calm shattered.

Machines vibrated with the force of his voice.

Sebastian roared.

“She chose YOU!”

Silence.

His breathing became ragged.

Years of obsession cracked open.

Pain spilled out.

Adrian understood.

This whole war—

Partly about science.

Mostly about rejection.

Sebastian hated Adrian because Sophia loved Adrian.

Sebastian whispered.

“She said I couldn’t love.”

He smiled bitterly.

“She was wrong.”

Claire spoke.

“No.”

Sebastian slowly turned.

Claire met his gaze.

“You don’t love.”

“You possess.”

His face hardened.

“You know nothing.”

Claire stepped forward.

“I know monsters.”

“And I know you.”

Her voice sharpened.

“You killed her.”

Sebastian’s silence confirmed everything.

Adrian’s fists shook.

“You murdered Sophia.”

Sebastian answered calmly.

“She chose death.”

That sentence broke something inside Adrian.

He attacked.

Fast.

Brutal.

His fist smashed into Sebastian’s jaw.

CRACK.

Chaos erupted.

Gunfire.

Guards rushed.

Claire fought two men.

Adrian shielded Lily.

Sebastian staggered back—

Then smiled.

Even bleeding.

Still smiling.

That smile terrified Claire.

Why wasn’t he worried?

Then—

Beep.

Beep.

Beep.

Every monitor turned red.

Warning lights flashed.

Claire froze.

No.

No.

The screen displayed:

FACILITY LOCKDOWN
SELF-DESTRUCT IN 60 SECONDS

Lily screamed.

“Daddy!”

Adrian looked around.

Explosives.

Hidden in pillars.

Walls.

Ceiling.

Everywhere.

Sebastian laughed through blood.

“If I lose…”

Cough.

“…nobody wins.”

Timer:

00:52

Claire sprinted to console.

Typing.

Denied.

Denied.

“Damn it!”

Timer:

00:41

Adrian held Lily tightly.

“Can you stop it?!”

Claire shouted—

“I need access!”

Sebastian smiled weakly.

“You won’t.”

Timer:

00:29

Lily suddenly looked at the console.

Her breathing slowed.

Eyes focused.

Not scared.

Concentrated.

Claire noticed.

Then Lily said quietly—

“The code is recursive.”

Claire froze.

“What?”

Lily pointed.

“He mirrored the sequence.”

Timer:

00:21

Claire stared at screen.

No.

A six-year-old shouldn’t understand this.

Lily continued.

“He used Fibonacci intervals.”

Sebastian’s smile vanished.

Impossible.

Timer:

00:15

Lily slipped from Adrian’s arms.

Ran to console.

Tiny fingers moved across keyboard.

Fast.

Too fast.

Code flew.

Timer:

00:08

Claire stopped breathing.

Adrian stared.

Sebastian’s eyes widened.

Not fear.

Wonder.

Timer:

00:04

Lily hit ENTER.

Silence.

Timer stopped.

00:01

Everything went dark.

Then normal.

Bomb disabled.

No explosion.

Dead silence.

Everyone stared at Lily.

She turned slowly.

Breathing hard.

Then collapsed.

Adrian caught her.

“LILY!”

Unconscious.

Pulse weak but present.

Alive.

Sebastian lay bleeding.

He stared at Lily with awe.

Then whispered—

“…perfect.”

Claire pointed gun at him.

“It ends here.”

Sebastian coughed blood.

Then smiled.

That smile again.

Terrifying.

He looked at Adrian.

Then at unconscious Lily.

Then whispered—

“You still don’t understand.”

Adrian glared.

“Understand what?”

Sebastian smiled weakly.

“She’s incomplete.”

Claire’s blood ran cold.

No.

Sebastian continued.

“Project Heir required balance.”

Adrian frowned.

“What are you saying?”

Sebastian’s lips moved slowly.

“The first success…”

Cough.

“…was never one child.”

Silence.

No.

Sebastian looked directly at Adrian.

Then delivered the final truth.

“It was twins.”

The room stopped.

Adrian’s heart nearly stopped.

Twins?

No.

Impossible.

Sophia never—

Sebastian whispered—

“One carries pattern recognition.”

He looked at Lily.

“The other carries strategic prediction.”

Claire trembled.

“The other…?”

Sebastian smiled.

“A boy.”

Adrian’s voice cracked.

“Where is he?”

Sebastian’s smile faded.

His last breath came slowly.

Then—

Final words.

“Already… watching…”

His head fell.

Still.

Dead.

Silence.

Thunder outside.

Machines humming.

Claire whispered.

“Oh God…”

Adrian held Lily tighter.

His mind reeled.

A twin.

A brother.

Alive.

Somewhere.

Watching.

Then—

One monitor turned on by itself.

Static.

Then a live video feed.

A dark room.

A chair.

A child sat there.

A boy.

Same age as Lily.

Same eyes.

Same face.

But colder.

Calmer.

He looked directly into camera.

Then smiled.

Not innocent.

Not warm.

Terrifyingly intelligent.

He spoke one sentence.

“Hello, Father.”

Screen went black.

Adrian froze.

Claire stopped breathing.

Because they both understood.

The nightmare wasn’t over.

May you like

It had just evolved.
