CHAPTER 2 — The Circle

Adrian Sterling could hear nothing except the sound of his own heartbeat.

Boom.

Boom.

Boom.

The empty bedroom felt like a nightmare.

The curtains moved in the cold wind.

The shattered glass beneath the window glittered under moonlight.

But Lily was gone.

Gone.

His daughter.

His little girl.

Adrian’s fingers crushed the black card in his hand.

His voice came out as a whisper.

“No…”

Then it exploded into a roar.

“LILY!”

He ran to the window.

Looked down.

Nothing.

No kidnappers.

No car.

No movement.

Just darkness.

Behind him, Claire stood frozen.

Her face had gone pale.

She looked like someone staring directly into hell.

Adrian turned sharply.

“What is The Circle?”

Claire’s lips trembled.

No answer.

Adrian stepped toward her.

His eyes burned.

“Claire!”

She flinched.

His voice dropped.

Dangerously calm.

“What. Is. The Circle?”

Claire swallowed.

Then finally spoke.

“They’re not just criminals.”

Adrian stared.

“They’re a network.”

“A trafficking ring?”

“No.”

“Assassins?”

“No.”

She shook her head.

“Worse.”

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

“They buy power.”

She continued.

“Politicians.”

“Judges.”

“Executives.”

“Heirs.”

“They don’t destroy people with bullets.”

She looked at him.

“They destroy bloodlines.”

A chill ran through Adrian’s body.

“What does that mean?”

Claire whispered—

“They infiltrate powerful families.”

Adrian’s breathing slowed.

His mind raced.

Vivian.

The poisoning.

The engagement.

Everything connected.

Claire continued.

“They manipulate marriages.”

“Control inheritance.”

“Remove obstacles.”

Then she looked straight at him.

“You were never their final target.”

Adrian froze.

“What?”

Claire’s voice broke.

“It’s Lily.”

Silence.

No.

No.

Adrian shook his head.

“No.”

Claire nodded with tears in her eyes.

“Yes.”

“They want your daughter.”

Adrian exploded.

“WHY?”

Claire’s voice shook.

“Because of her mother.”

The world stopped.

Adrian’s face changed.

Lily’s mother.

The one subject he never discussed.

Never.

Not with media.

Not with employees.

Not with friends.

Even Lily knew very little.

Adrian whispered—

“How do you know about Sophia?”

Claire stared.

Then said something impossible.

“I knew her.”

Adrian’s eyes widened.

No.

Impossible.

Claire and Sophia?

His late wife?

How?

“When?”

Claire answered.

“Before she met you.”

Adrian stepped back.

His mind spun.

Sophia Sterling.

Elegant.

Brilliant.

Warm.

The woman who died in a car crash four years ago.

The woman Adrian had mourned in silence.

The mother of Lily.

He whispered—

“Tell me everything.”

Claire inhaled.

“She wasn’t who you thought.”

Adrian’s face hardened.

“Careful.”

Claire shook her head.

“No—I don’t mean she lied to you.”

“She loved you.”

“Truly.”

Adrian said nothing.

Claire continued.

“But before you… Sophia worked undercover.”

Adrian stared.

Undercover?

“What are you talking about?”

Claire said the words slowly.

“She was investigating The Circle.”

The room spun.

No.

Sophia?

His wife?

Impossible.

“She was a journalist.”

Adrian said.

“Yes.”

Claire replied.

“A very dangerous one.”

Claire reached into her coat.

Pulled out a folded envelope.

Old.

Worn.

Protected for years.

She handed it to Adrian.

“It’s from Sophia.”

Adrian didn’t move.

His hands trembled.

“No…”

“She told me to give this to you only if something happened to Lily.”

Adrian slowly took it.

The handwriting.

He recognized it instantly.

Sophia’s.

His chest tightened.

He opened it.

Inside—

A letter.

He read.

Adrian,

If you’re reading this, then I failed.

I’m sorry.

There are truths I hid from you because loving you made me weak.

I thought I could protect you by carrying the burden alone.

I was wrong.

The Circle is real.

They operate inside the world’s richest families.

They steal legacies.

But they want something even more valuable now.

Not money.

Not shares.

Not property.

A child.

Our daughter.

Lily is not important because she is your heir.

She is important because of what she carries.

If they come for her—

Run.

Trust Claire.

No one else.

Not even those closest to you.

And Adrian…

I never stopped loving you.

— Sophia

Adrian stopped reading.

His vision blurred.

His hands shook violently.

He looked at Claire.

“What does she carry?”

Claire looked devastated.

“She didn’t tell me.”

Adrian slammed the letter onto the bed.

“No!”

His voice thundered.

“No more secrets!”

He grabbed Claire’s shoulders.

“What does my daughter carry?!”

Claire cried.

“I DON’T KNOW!”

Silence.

Only heavy breathing.

Then—

Adrian released her.

Stepped back.

Trying to think.

Security.

Cameras.

Cars.

Phones.

He pulled out his phone.

Called head security.

“Lock every gate.”

“Yes sir!”

“Activate city tracking.”

“Yes sir!”

“Find my daughter.”

“Yes sir!”

He hung up.

Then his screen lit up.

Unknown number.

Again.

Adrian answered instantly.

“Where is she?”

A distorted voice laughed.

Calm.

Mocking.

“Mr. Sterling.”

Adrian clenched his fist.

“If you hurt her—”

The voice interrupted.

“You misunderstand.”

Pause.

“We don’t want to hurt Lily.”

Adrian’s voice became ice.

“Then why take her?”

“Because she belongs with us.”

“No.”

“She always did.”

Adrian’s blood froze.

“What?”

The voice continued.

“You really should ask how your wife died.”

Adrian stopped breathing.

“No.”

“Car crash?”

The voice laughed.

Cold.

Cruel.

“Is that what they told you?”

Adrian’s knees weakened.

No.

No.

Sophia…

No.

The voice whispered—

“She was murdered.”

The call ended.

Adrian stared at the phone.

His entire body shook.

Claire covered her mouth.

She had heard everything.

Adrian whispered—

“Sophia was murdered.”

Claire’s eyes filled.

“Yes.”

Adrian looked at her.

“You knew.”

She said nothing.

“You knew.”

Silence.

Adrian’s rage erupted.

“YOU KNEW?!”

Claire cried.

“I had no proof!”

“You let me believe it was an accident!”

“I was protecting Lily!”

Adrian laughed bitterly.

“Protecting?”

He stepped away.

“Everyone protects me with lies.”

He looked broken.

Claire whispered.

“Adrian…”

He didn’t respond.

Then—

A voice came from the doorway.

“Dad?”

Both turned.

Lily.

Standing there.

Holding her teddy bear.

Alive.

Safe.

Adrian froze.

No.

No.

Impossible.

He sprinted.

Dropped to his knees.

Grabbed her.

“Lily!”

He checked her arms.

Face.

Neck.

No injuries.

Nothing.

Adrian looked stunned.

“How—?”

Lily blinked.

“Why are you crying?”

Adrian held her tightly.

“You were gone.”

Lily frowned.

“No.”

“I was in the secret room.”

Silence.

Secret room?

Adrian slowly looked at Claire.

Claire’s face lost all color.

“No…”

Lily pointed toward the wall.

Bookshelf.

Adrian narrowed his eyes.

There was no room there.

He walked over.

Pressed the shelf.

Nothing.

Lily said—

“Bear button.”

She lifted her teddy.

Pressed one small stitched bear emblem against the wood.

CLICK.

The bookshelf moved.

Adrian stared.

Behind it—

A hidden chamber.

Small.

Dark.

Inside…

A monitor.

Medical equipment.

Documents.

Files.

Sophia’s files.

Adrian felt his soul leave his body.

This room had always existed.

Inside his own house.

Without his knowledge.

Claire whispered—

“Sophia…”

Adrian stepped inside.

Dust covered everything.

But the monitor still had power.

A blinking message appeared.

IF ADRIAN IS WATCHING THIS, IT IS TIME.

Adrian’s breath stopped.

The screen turned on.

Sophia appeared.

Recorded video.

Alive.

Smiling sadly.

Adrian collapsed into a chair.

“No…”

Sophia looked into the camera.

“Adrian.”

Her voice.

Her face.

It broke him.

“If you’re seeing this, I’m gone.”

Tears streamed down his face.

Sophia continued.

“You probably hate me right now.”

“No…”

“But you need truth.”

Her expression changed.

Serious.

Deadly.

“The Circle doesn’t just manipulate families.”

She inhaled.

“They engineer bloodlines.”

Adrian frowned.

“What?”

Sophia continued.

“They’ve spent decades researching genetic memory.”

Claire stared at the screen.

Shocked.

Even she didn’t know this.

Sophia said—

“They believe trauma, intelligence, instincts, and rare neurological traits can be inherited and amplified.”

Adrian couldn’t process.

This sounded insane.

Sophia continued.

“They call it Project Heir.”

Claire whispered.

“Oh my God…”

Sophia looked directly at camera.

“They targeted powerful bloodlines to create children with extraordinary cognitive adaptability.”

Adrian’s blood ran cold.

Then—

Sophia said the sentence that changed everything.

“Lily is one of those children.”

Dead silence.

Adrian stopped breathing.

No.

No.

No.

Sophia continued.

“She inherited something rare.”

“Pattern integration.”

“She learns, predicts, and adapts beyond normal developmental ranges.”

Adrian remembered.

Lily solving puzzles too fast.

Learning languages rapidly.

Noticing tiny details.

Things doctors called gifted.

Not abnormal.

Gifted.

Sophia shook her head.

“They will come for her.”

“They believe Lily is the first successful child.”

Adrian whispered—

“No…”

Sophia’s face softened.

“She is not an experiment to me.”

“She is my daughter.”

“She is love.”

“She is hope.”

Tears ran down Adrian’s face.

Sophia whispered—

“Protect her.”

The screen glitched.

Then froze.

Static.

Then black.

Silence.

The hidden room felt suffocating.

Adrian slowly turned toward Lily.

She stood hugging her teddy.

Completely innocent.

Completely unaware.

A six-year-old child.

Yet hunted by monsters.

Then Lily said softly—

“Daddy?”

Adrian knelt.

“Yes?”

She tilted her head.

“Bad people are here.”

Claire’s blood froze.

“What?”

Lily pointed.

Not outside.

Not hallway.

Behind Adrian.

Adrian turned—

Too late.

THUD.

Something heavy hit his skull.

Darkness exploded.

He collapsed.

Claire screamed.

A masked figure emerged from shadows.

Then another.

Then another.

Three intruders.

Inside the secret room.

One grabbed Lily.

She screamed.

“DADDY!”

Claire attacked instantly.

She kicked one attacker.

CRACK.

He fell.

Another grabbed her hair.

She slammed her elbow backward.

Blood sprayed.

Third attacker injected something into her neck.

Claire’s body weakened instantly.

No.

Sedative.

She dropped to one knee.

Vision blurring.

The leader removed his mask.

Claire’s heart stopped.

She recognized him.

Impossible.

“No…”

The man smiled.

Elegant.

Terrifying.

“Well, Claire.”

He crouched.

“We meet again.”

Claire whispered—

“You died.”

He laughed.

“No.”

His eyes gleamed.

“I evolved.”

Claire trembled.

This man.

This monster.

The one who orchestrated her kidnapping.

The one who ruined lives.

The one she feared most.

He smiled.

Then spoke his name.

“Sebastian Vale.”

Claire’s body shook.

Sebastian gently lifted Lily into his arms.

The child struggled.

He smiled softly at her.

Almost lovingly.

“You truly are remarkable.”

Lily cried.

“Let me go!”

Sebastian looked at Adrian’s unconscious body.

Then at Claire.

His smile widened.

“Tell Adrian something for me.”

Claire glared.

He leaned close.

Voice like poison.

“The engagement party was merely an invitation.”

He stood.

Then said—

“The real game begins tomorrow.”

He turned to leave.

Then paused.

Without looking back—

He delivered the final blow.

“Oh… and one more thing.”

Claire’s blood ran cold.

Sebastian smiled.

“I’m Lily’s biological father.”

Silence.

Absolute silence.

Claire stopped breathing.

No.

No.

No.

That was impossible.

Impossible.

He disappeared into darkness with Lily.

Claire screamed—

“NO!”

Her voice echoed through the mansion.

And Adrian lay unconscious.

May you like

Unaware that the cruelest truth had just been revealed.
