Chapter 8 - Pier 47

Pier 47 smelled of salt, rust, and old sins.

By afternoon, rain had begun to fall in thin silver lines, turning the wooden boards slick beneath Aleandro’s shoes. The Hudson moved darkly below, restless against the pilings. Warehouses stood abandoned along the edge, their windows broken or painted black.

Aleandro walked without guards visible.

That did not mean he was alone.

Luca moved somewhere behind the second warehouse. Two men watched from a rooftop. Another waited in a delivery truck three blocks away. But Aleandro had ordered them all to keep distance.

Marco had asked him to look under Pier 47.

So Aleandro looked.

Near the far end of the pier, beneath a loose metal panel, they found a sealed container wrapped in plastic.

Inside were documents.

Not drugs.

Not weapons.

Documents.

Bank records. Property transfers. Photographs. Copies of passports. A list of payments to judges, contractors, inspectors, city officials, and companies that should not have existed.

At the top of one folder was a name Aleandro had not expected.

VINCENT MORETTI.

His father.

Aleandro’s hands went still.

Luca stood beside him, rain dripping from his coat. “Boss?”

Aleandro opened the folder.

Inside was a birth certificate.

Miguel Alvarez.

Father: Vincent Moretti.

Mother: Elena Alvarez.

For a moment, the rain, the river, the city, and the men around him vanished.

Miguel had not merely worked near the Moretti world.

He had belonged to it by blood.

Aleandro’s half-brother.

A brother he had never known.

A brother who died after finding secrets buried by the family that should have protected him.

Luca swore under his breath.

Aleandro did not speak.

He read the next document.

A trust account had been opened years earlier in Sophia’s name. It contained millions in hidden money moved through old Moretti channels. If discovered, it could expose Vincent’s secret child, Marco’s theft, and half the family’s illegal empire.

Sophia was leverage.

Miguel had written the truth.

Not because she knew anything.

Because her name was attached to everything.

Aleandro closed the folder slowly.

His phone rang.

Maria.

He answered immediately. “Where are you?”

Her voice shook. “Mrs. Bellini’s kitchen.”

“Is Sophia with you?”

“Yes.”

“Stay there.”

“What did you find?”

Aleandro looked at the birth certificate in his hand.

He could lie.

He had lied all his life.

But not to her.

“Miguel was my brother.”

Silence.

Then Maria whispered, “What?”

“My father had another family. Miguel found proof. Marco found out. The money is in Sophia’s name.”

“No. No, that makes no sense.”

“I am coming back.”

“Aleandro—”

The line crackled.

Then another voice came through.

Marco.

“Do not come back.”

Aleandro’s blood turned cold.

“Marco.”

“I’m sorry,” Marco said.

Behind him, Maria gasped.

Aleandro heard Sophia cry out, “Mama!”

Then the call ended.

Aleandro stood in the rain, phone still pressed to his ear.

Luca spoke urgently. “Boss?”

Aleandro turned.

His face was no longer cold.

It was empty.

And emptiness in Aleandro Moretti was more dangerous than rage.

“Find them,” he said.

Within minutes, the city began to move.

Cars left garages. Men crossed bridges. Cameras were accessed. Debts were called. Favors awakened from years of sleep.

But Marco knew Aleandro’s system because he had built half of it.

He avoided the main roads.

He switched vehicles under an overpass.

He kept Maria’s phone in a trash can near a bus station.

By the time Aleandro’s people found it, Maria and Sophia were gone.

Inside a gray van heading south, Sophia sat on Maria’s lap, sobbing into her chest. Marco drove with one hand, his face tight with misery.

Maria stared at the back of his head. “Miguel trusted you.”

Marco flinched.

“He showed you kindness, didn’t he?”

“Stop.”

“You killed him.”

“I said stop.”

Sophia cried harder.

Marco slammed his hand against the steering wheel, then immediately looked ashamed.

“I did not mean for him to die,” he said.

Maria’s voice broke. “But he did.”

Marco looked at them in the mirror.

For a moment, he looked like a man drowning.

Then his phone buzzed.

UNKNOWN: Bring them to the marina. Moretti is moving.

May you like

Marco swallowed.

The final journey had begun.
