Chapter 13 - The Letter from Marco

Marco Ricci’s letter arrived two weeks later.

Maria did not want to open it.

Sophia was at preschool. Aleandro was across town giving his third statement to investigators. The brownstone kitchen smelled of cinnamon because Mrs. Bellini believed grief should never be faced without baked apples.

The envelope sat on the table.

Maria stared at it as if it might breathe.

Mrs. Bellini placed a cup of tea beside her. “Some letters are knives. Some are bandages. Most are both.”

Maria opened it.

Marco’s handwriting was neat, controlled, familiar from schedules left in estate laundry rooms and notes attached to pay envelopes.

Maria,

There is no apology large enough for what I did. I will not insult you by pretending there is.

Miguel died because I chose fear and greed over decency. I told myself I did not kill him because my hands were clean. That was a lie. A man can murder with a phone call, with a delay, with silence.

Maria stopped reading.

Her vision blurred.

She forced herself to continue.

I came to your apartment after he died because I wanted to see whether you knew anything. Sophia opened the door before you reached it. She asked if I was one of her daddy’s friends. I said yes.

That may be the worst lie I ever told.

I kept watching because Vitale was watching me. Then I convinced myself I was protecting you by controlling where you went. That was another lie.

At the marina, I did one decent thing too late. I know it does not earn forgiveness. I am not asking for it.

There is a second locker. Miguel’s. Not mine. I kept it hidden because it proved everything. The key is taped beneath the third drawer of my desk in the estate office. Give it to Aleandro or Detective Price.

Tell Sophia the truth when she is old enough: her father was brave. Braver than all of us.

Marco.

Maria folded the letter slowly.

Mrs. Bellini watched her. “And?”

Maria wiped her cheeks. “Both. Knife and bandage.”

That afternoon, Detective Price retrieved the key. The second locker contained Miguel’s recorded voice.

He had filmed himself on an old phone, sitting in his work truck, face tired and dusty.

Maria watched the video with Aleandro beside her.

On screen, Miguel swallowed hard.

“If you’re watching this, Mari, it means I got scared enough to make a backup. First, I love you. Second, kiss Sophia for me. Third, if I’m wrong, throw this away and tell me I’m dramatic.”

Maria laughed through tears.

Miguel continued.

“I found something tied to the Moretti family. I don’t know how deep it goes. I don’t know who to trust. But there’s one name that keeps showing up: Marco Ricci.”

Aleandro looked down.

Miguel leaned closer to the camera.

“And there’s something else. I think Vincent Moretti was my father. I don’t know what that makes me. I don’t care. I already have a family. Maria. Sophia. That’s enough.”

Maria covered her mouth.

The video ended with Miguel looking off-camera at a child’s drawing taped to his dashboard.

“If I don’t come home,” he said, voice breaking, “tell my daughter I tried to be the kind of man she could draw with a smile.”

The screen went black.

Maria broke.

Aleandro did not touch her until she reached for his sleeve.

Then he held her as she cried for the man who should have come home.

Not as a boss.

Not as a savior.

As the brother Miguel never knew.

And for the first time in years, Aleandro Moretti cried too.
