Chapter 3 — The Orphanage of Broken Children

The words hung in the air like poison.

He’s training him.

Adrian stared at Clara.

His mind rejected what he had just heard.

“Training?”

His voice was barely audible.

Clara’s body shook.

Vanessa remained on the floor, pale and trembling.

Emma clung to her mother’s dress, confused and frightened.

Around them, the ballroom had become eerily silent again.

Even the guests who had stayed no longer dared whisper.

Everyone could feel it.

This story had become something far darker than a family scandal.

It was no longer about betrayal.

It was about control.

About manipulation.

About monsters hiding behind wealth and elegance.

Adrian tightened his jaw.

“Clara…”

He lowered his voice.

“Tell me everything.”

Clara shut her eyes.

For several seconds, she couldn’t speak.

Her breathing became uneven.

As if simply remembering hurt.

Adrian gently touched her shoulder.

“I need the truth.”

Clara opened her eyes.

Tears filled them.

Then she began.

“I don’t know who my real parents were.”

Her voice was hollow.

“I was left at Saint Mary’s when I was four.”

Vanessa lowered her head.

Shame covered her face.

Clara continued.

“At first… it looked normal.”

“A beautiful orphanage.”

“Clean uniforms.”

“Kind smiles.”

“Charity galas.”

“Rich donors.”

She laughed bitterly.

“All lies.”

Adrian listened in silence.

Clara’s voice became colder.

“At night…”

Her hands shook.

“…the real Saint Mary’s appeared.”

Emma looked up at her mother.

Clara stroked her daughter’s hair as if grounding herself.

Then continued.

“There were rules.”

“Strict rules.”

“If you cried, you were punished.”

“If you resisted, you were punished.”

“If you disobeyed…”

Her voice cracked.

“…you disappeared.”

Adrian’s face darkened.

“What kind of punishment?”

Clara hesitated.

Then answered.

“Isolation.”

“Cold rooms.”

“No food.”

“No light.”

“No sound.”

Vanessa covered her mouth.

Clara continued.

“Some children were forced to fight.”

Adrian froze.

“What?”

Clara nodded.

“Richard believed suffering created strength.”

“He tested us.”

“Manipulated us.”

“Studied us.”

She stared into nothing.

“He said broken children were easier to shape.”

Adrian’s fists clenched.

Monster.

Clara continued.

“He chose favorites.”

“Children with intelligence.”

“Children with emotional control.”

“Children with survival instinct.”

Her lips trembled.

“I was one of them.”

Adrian whispered—

“No…”

Clara nodded.

“He called us his investments.”

Silence.

No one moved.

No one breathed.

Clara continued.

“He trained us to read people.”

“To manipulate emotions.”

“To predict weakness.”

“To obey.”

Adrian stared.

This wasn’t abuse alone.

This was conditioning.

Psychological engineering.

Clara’s voice dropped.

“He wanted to create perfect tools.”

Adrian asked—

“For what?”

Clara looked directly at him.

“Power.”

Vanessa began crying again.

Clara continued.

“He placed children into powerful families.”

“Assistants.”

“Advisors.”

“Spouses.”

“Employees.”

Adrian’s blood turned cold.

No.

No.

No.

He already knew where this was going.

Clara saw his expression.

“Yes.”

She whispered.

“That includes me.”

Adrian stepped back.

“You mean…”

Clara nodded.

“I was assigned to you.”

The ballroom exploded.

Guests gasped.

Emma looked between them, confused.

Adrian’s voice cracked.

“No.”

Clara cried.

“I’m sorry.”

Adrian’s chest tightened.

“No.”

He shook his head.

“No, tell me that’s not what you mean.”

Clara sobbed.

“When I first met you…”

She looked shattered.

“…it wasn’t an accident.”

Adrian remembered.

Seven years ago.

Rain.

A bookstore.

She dropped her books.

He helped her.

They talked for hours.

He fell in love.

Was all of it planned?

Clara whispered—

“Richard ordered me to get close to you.”

Adrian’s breathing became sharp.

“Why?”

Clara answered.

“Because your father rejected him.”

Adrian froze.

His father.

Leonard Vale.

The founder of Vale Global.

A ruthless businessman—but honorable.

He died believing in legacy and family.

Clara continued.

“Richard wanted control over the Vale empire.”

“He couldn’t beat your father directly.”

“So he chose another path.”

Adrian whispered—

“Me.”

Clara nodded.

“You.”

Silence.

Adrian’s heart pounded.

The woman he loved…

Was sent to manipulate him?

Every memory became unstable.

Every smile.

Every kiss.

Every promise.

Was it all fake?

Clara saw the question in his eyes.

And it broke her.

“No.”

She crawled toward him.

“No, Adrian, please.”

He didn’t move.

Tears streamed down her face.

“At first… yes.”

Those words cut deep.

“At first, I approached you because I was ordered to.”

Adrian shut his eyes.

Pain hit like a blade.

Clara cried harder.

“But everything changed.”

Her voice shattered.

“I fell in love with you.”

Adrian remained silent.

She grabbed his hand.

Desperate.

“Richard trained me to manipulate emotions.”

She sobbed.

“But he never taught me what to do when emotions became real.”

Adrian opened his eyes.

Clara looked destroyed.

“I tried to report your weaknesses.”

“But I couldn’t.”

“Every report became shorter.”

“Every lie became harder.”

“Because I loved you.”

She pressed his hand against her heart.

“This…”

She cried.

“This was real.”

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

Clara whispered—

“I chose you.”

“Not him.”

“Not the mission.”

“You.”

Emma began crying again.

“Daddy…”

That tiny voice cracked something inside Adrian.

He looked at his daughter.

Then at Clara.

He remembered every moment.

The way she looked at him when he worked too hard.

The way she held Emma after birth.

The way she cried when his father died.

No.

That wasn’t performance.

That was real.

Still—

One question remained.

Adrian asked quietly—

“Then why didn’t you tell me?”

Clara froze.

Because she knew.

This was the hardest truth.

She whispered—

“Because I was afraid.”

“Afraid you’d hate me.”

Adrian’s face remained unreadable.

Clara lowered her head.

“And because…”

She shook violently.

“…Richard had one last weapon.”

Adrian narrowed his eyes.

“What weapon?”

Clara looked at Vanessa.

Vanessa froze.

Clara whispered—

“Her.”

Silence.

Adrian turned slowly.

Vanessa shook her head.

“No…”

Clara continued.

“After I disappeared…”

“Richard moved to phase two.”

Adrian stopped breathing.

Phase two?

Clara looked at Vanessa.

“He prepared another girl.”

Vanessa screamed—

“STOP!”

Clara shouted back—

“NO!”

Years of pain erupted.

“You knew!”

Vanessa broke.

“Yes!”

She sobbed.

“Yes!”

Adrian stared.

Vanessa collapsed.

“I didn’t want this!”

She screamed through tears.

“My father controlled everything!”

Clara shook with rage.

“You still agreed.”

Vanessa cried.

“I had no choice!”

Clara’s voice turned deadly calm.

“Yes.”

She stepped toward Vanessa.

“You did.”

Vanessa trembled.

Clara’s voice sliced through the silence.

“You were phase two.”

Adrian’s blood ran cold.

Clara continued.

“Richard trained her to replace me.”

“To comfort you.”

“To become indispensable.”

“To marry you.”

Adrian stared at Vanessa.

Memories flashed.

Her perfect timing.

Her emotional intelligence.

The way she always knew what to say.

Too perfect.

Too calculated.

Vanessa cried.

“I never wanted to hurt you!”

Adrian asked one question.

Cold.

Sharp.

“Did you love me?”

Vanessa froze.

Silence.

Then—

She answered.

“Yes.”

Real tears.

Raw pain.

“Yes.”

Clara stiffened.

Vanessa looked at Adrian.

“I was supposed to manipulate you.”

Her voice cracked.

“But I failed too.”

Adrian stared.

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

“Funny, right?”

She wiped tears.

“Your father destroyed Richard’s plans twice.”

Adrian frowned.

“My father?”

Vanessa nodded.

“No.”

She looked at him.

“You.”

Adrian went still.

Vanessa whispered—

“Because we both fell in love with you.”

Silence.

No one moved.

No one spoke.

The truth was grotesque.

Richard trained women as tools.

Yet both developed real feelings.

The irony was brutal.

Then—

A slow clap echoed.

Everyone froze.

One clap.

Two.

Three.

The ballroom doors opened.

Adrian’s security raised weapons.

Too late.

Richard Sinclair stood there.

Calm.

Elegant.

Untouched.

And beside him—

A little boy.

Five years old.

Dark hair.

Gray eyes.

Adrian stopped breathing.

Clara screamed.

“No!”

The boy held Richard’s hand.

He looked innocent.

Unaware.

Richard smiled.

“Well.”

His voice was smooth.

“What a beautiful family reunion.”

Adrian’s entire body locked.

His son.

His son was right there.

Alive.

Breathing.

Looking around curiously.

The boy noticed Clara.

Then Emma.

Then Adrian.

His eyes widened.

“Mommy?”

Clara sobbed.

“My baby…”

The boy smiled.

Then looked at Adrian.

“Daddy?”

Adrian nearly collapsed.

That word.

Again.

Richard casually rested a hand on the boy’s shoulder.

Possessive.

Controlling.

Adrian’s voice became lethal.

“Take your hand off him.”

Richard smiled.

“Or what?”

Security aimed.

Richard laughed.

Then—

Click.

A sound.

Metal.

Every guard froze.

Laser dots appeared.

Red dots.

On Emma.

On Clara.

On Adrian.

Snipers.

Hidden.

Guests screamed.

Richard remained calm.

“As I said.”

He smiled.

“Play by my rules.”

Adrian clenched his fists.

“You brought him here?”

Richard nodded.

“Yes.”

Adrian narrowed his eyes.

“Why?”

Richard’s smile widened.

“Because tonight is evaluation night.”

Clara stopped breathing.

“No…”

Richard looked amused.

“You remember.”

Clara shook.

“No.”

Richard ignored her.

He crouched beside the boy.

Then spoke words that froze everyone.

“Choose.”

Adrian frowned.

“What?”

Richard looked up.

At the boy.

At Emma.

At Clara.

At Adrian.

Then he said—

“The children stay.”

His smile vanished.

“The parents leave.”

Clara screamed—

“NO!”

Richard’s voice thundered.

“OR…”

He looked at Adrian.

“…both children die.”

Emma cried.

The boy looked confused.

“Uncle?”

Richard gently touched his head.

“Choose, Adrian.”

Adrian’s heart pounded violently.

This wasn’t negotiation.

This was torture.

Richard wanted control.

Wanted submission.

Wanted Adrian broken.

Clara collapsed.

Sobbing.

“No…”

Adrian stared at both children.

Emma.

Their daughter.

The son he just found.

Impossible.

No choice existed.

Richard smiled.

“Ten seconds.”

“Ten.”

Clara screamed.

“NINE.”

Emma cried.

“EIGHT.”

The boy looked scared.

“SEVEN.”

Adrian’s mind raced.

“SIX.”

No opening.

No shot.

No weakness.

“FIVE.”

Richard was winning.

“FOUR.”

Unless—

Adrian suddenly noticed something.

The boy.

His son.

The child had quietly stepped on Richard’s shoe.

Not by accident.

Intentional.

Adrian froze.

The boy looked at him.

Just once.

And winked.

Adrian stopped breathing.

Winked?

Then the boy whispered something.

So softly only Adrian caught it.

Three words.

Three impossible words.

“Like Mommy taught.”

Adrian’s pupils dilated.

Clara froze too.

No.

No way.

Their son…

Richard reached—

Too late.

The boy moved.

Fast.

Too fast for a normal child.

He twisted.

Dropped low.

Grabbed Richard’s wrist.

And in one fluid motion—

Snapped his finger backward.

CRACK.

Richard screamed.

The ballroom exploded.

Adrian’s mind went blank.

The five-year-old stood there.

Balanced.

Calm.

Controlled.

Like a trained fighter.

The boy looked at Clara.

Then smiled.

The same smile.

The same eyes.

But not innocent anymore.

He spoke clearly.

And every adult in the room froze.

“Mom.”

He tilted his head.

May you like

“When do I stop pretending?”

To be continued…
