Chapter 2 — The Child Hidden in Shadows

The ballroom had turned into chaos.

Guests whispered.

Phones came out.

Security stood frozen, unsure who to obey.

Some people rushed toward the exits, desperate to escape the storm unfolding before them.

But Adrian Vale heard none of it.

His entire world had narrowed to one horrifying truth.

He had a son.

A son he never knew existed.

A son stolen from him.

For five years.

And now that child was somewhere out there—alive, hidden, and in danger.

Adrian’s grip tightened around Richard Sinclair’s collar.

His knuckles turned white.

“Tell me where he is.”

Richard smirked despite the blood at the corner of his lips.

“You still haven’t learned, Adrian.”

Adrian’s voice dropped to something terrifyingly calm.

“This is your last chance.”

Richard chuckled.

“No.”

The word was barely spoken.

But it was enough.

Adrian slammed Richard against the nearest marble pillar.

The impact echoed through the ballroom.

Vanessa screamed.

“STOP!”

Clara rushed forward.

“Adrian!”

Emma cried hysterically.

“Daddy!”

Richard coughed but kept smiling.

That smile only made Adrian more dangerous.

“You took my wife.”

Adrian’s breathing grew heavier.

“You stole five years from my daughter.”

His voice shook with rage.

“And now you’re telling me you stole my son?”

He slammed Richard harder.

“WHERE IS HE?”

Richard looked directly into Adrian’s eyes.

And whispered—

“You’re already too late.”

That sentence hit like a knife.

Adrian froze.

Too late?

Clara’s face turned ghostly pale.

“No…”

Vanessa grabbed her father’s arm.

“Dad, stop!”

Richard pushed her away.

“Enough.”

His voice was cold again.

Controlled.

Powerful.

The manipulative businessman had returned.

“You want your son?”

He adjusted his tie.

“Then play by my rules.”

Adrian stared at him.

Every instinct screamed to kill him.

But Clara stepped between them.

“Adrian, wait.”

He looked at her.

Her eyes were full of fear.

And something else.

Guilt.

“Clara.”

His voice softened slightly.

“What aren’t you telling me?”

Clara trembled.

Richard smiled.

“Yes.”

He folded his arms.

“Tell him.”

Clara shook her head.

“Please…”

Richard’s expression darkened.

“If you don’t…”

He glanced at Emma.

Clara instantly stiffened.

Adrian noticed.

He moved Emma behind him protectively.

“Don’t look at my daughter.”

Richard shrugged.

“Then tell him.”

Clara broke.

Tears streamed down her face.

“When I woke up after the accident…”

Her voice cracked.

“…I wasn’t alone.”

Adrian remained silent.

She continued.

“I was badly injured.”

“I had internal bleeding.”

“The doctors said…”

She swallowed.

“…the baby might not survive.”

Adrian’s heart pounded.

Baby.

Their son.

Clara squeezed her hands.

“I begged them to save him.”

“They performed emergency surgery.”

Her body shook.

“When I woke up again…”

She burst into tears.

“The baby was gone.”

Adrian’s face hardened.

“Gone?”

Clara nodded.

“They told me he died.”

Silence.

Then—

Richard clapped slowly.

Mockingly.

“Beautiful performance.”

Clara screamed—

“SHUT UP!”

Everyone froze.

No one expected the gentle housekeeper to explode.

Clara pointed at Richard.

“You told me my son was dead!”

Richard smiled.

“Yes.”

Adrian’s breathing became uneven.

Clara continued.

“I believed him.”

“For months.”

“I mourned my son.”

“I thought I lost everything.”

She collapsed into sobs.

“But one day…”

She looked at Adrian.

“I heard a nurse.”

Adrian leaned closer.

“She said something.”

Clara whispered—

‘The baby survived.’

Adrian’s entire body went still.

Alive.

His son had survived.

Clara cried.

“I confronted Richard.”

“He admitted everything.”

Richard sighed.

“You were emotional.”

Clara screamed through tears.

“You stole my baby!”

Emma clung to Adrian’s leg, frightened.

Adrian slowly turned to Richard.

His eyes now empty.

Dangerously empty.

“Why?”

Richard answered without hesitation.

“Leverage.”

The guests gasped.

Richard continued.

“As long as the boy existed…”

He smirked.

“…you and Clara could never fully escape me.”

Adrian whispered—

“You’re insane.”

Richard laughed.

“No.”

He stepped closer.

“I’m practical.”

Vanessa shook her head.

“No…”

She stared at her father.

“No, tell me this isn’t true.”

Richard didn’t look at her.

“I built empires by understanding weakness.”

He pointed at Adrian.

“His weakness is family.”

He pointed at Clara.

“Her weakness is love.”

He smiled.

“The boy became insurance.”

Vanessa staggered backward.

Her whole body shaking.

“You kidnapped a baby?”

Richard finally looked at her.

Cold.

Emotionless.

“Yes.”

Vanessa looked shattered.

“No…”

Adrian narrowed his eyes.

Something felt wrong.

Very wrong.

Vanessa looked horrified.

Too horrified.

Was she acting?

Or was she truly unaware?

Before Adrian could think—

A phone rang.

Richard calmly reached into his pocket.

Adrian snatched it first.

Unknown number.

Richard smiled.

“Answer it.”

Adrian pressed speaker.

A distorted voice filled the room.

“Mr. Sinclair.”

Everyone froze.

The voice continued.

“The package is moving.”

Adrian’s blood ran cold.

Package.

The child.

Richard smiled wider.

“Excellent timing.”

The voice continued.

“We’re ready for transfer.”

Adrian shouted—

“WHO ARE YOU?”

Silence.

Then the voice laughed.

“You must be the father.”

Clara nearly collapsed.

Adrian gripped the phone harder.

“Where is my son?”

The voice answered.

“Safe.”

Adrian roared—

“I WANT PROOF!”

A pause.

Then—

A small voice came through.

Soft.

Sleepy.

Confused.

“Hello?”

Clara screamed.

Her knees gave out.

Adrian stopped breathing.

A boy’s voice.

Five years old.

Tiny.

Fragile.

“Who’s there?” the boy asked.

Clara sobbed uncontrollably.

“That’s him…”

Adrian’s chest tightened so violently it hurt.

His son.

He was hearing his son’s voice for the first time.

The boy spoke again.

“Uncle said Mommy and Daddy are coming.”

Clara broke.

Adrian could barely breathe.

“Son…”

His voice cracked.

The boy went quiet.

“Who are you?”

Adrian’s hands shook.

“I…”

He couldn’t say it.

Five years.

Five years stolen.

Finally he whispered—

“I’m your dad.”

Silence.

Long silence.

Then—

“Dad?”

One word.

One tiny word.

And Adrian shattered inside.

Tears filled his eyes.

The great billionaire.

The ruthless businessman.

Crying in front of hundreds.

“Yes.”

His voice broke.

“Yes, son.”

The boy’s voice became excited.

“Really?”

Adrian nodded though the boy couldn’t see.

“Yes.”

The boy asked—

“Are you coming?”

Clara covered her mouth.

Adrian whispered—

“Yes.”

The distorted voice returned.

“Touching.”

Adrian’s expression hardened instantly.

“What do you want?”

The voice laughed.

“Simple.”

Then—

Boom.

The ballroom lights died.

Total darkness.

Screams erupted.

Emma cried.

Clara gasped.

People panicked.

Then emergency red lights turned on.

Everything glowed crimson.

Like blood.

At the center of the room—

Richard was gone.

Vanessa screamed.

“Dad?!”

Security shouted.

“He disappeared!”

Adrian cursed.

Smoke spread from the side exits.

Diversion.

Planned.

Adrian turned.

Richard had escaped.

He looked at the phone.

Disconnected.

Clara grabbed his arm.

“He took them.”

Adrian’s voice became steel.

“No.”

Clara stared.

Adrian looked toward his head of security.

“Lock every road.”

“Yes, sir!”

“No private jets.”

“Yes, sir!”

“No boats.”

“Yes, sir!”

“Freeze every Sinclair asset.”

The guard blinked.

“Every… asset?”

Adrian’s eyes burned.

“Everything.”

Within seconds his team moved.

Adrian turned to Vanessa.

She stood shaking.

Lost.

Broken.

Then something happened.

Very small.

But Clara noticed.

Vanessa’s phone lit up.

A message appeared.

Just one sentence.

DON’T BETRAY ME.

Clara froze.

Vanessa instantly hid the phone.

Too late.

Adrian saw it.

The room went silent again.

Vanessa looked up slowly.

Panic in her eyes.

Adrian’s voice turned cold.

“Show me your phone.”

Vanessa swallowed.

“No.”

Adrian stepped forward.

“Show me.”

She backed away.

Tears formed.

“It’s not what you think.”

Adrian’s face hardened.

“What did he send?”

Vanessa shook.

“Nothing.”

Clara whispered—

“She knows something.”

Vanessa snapped.

“No!”

Adrian’s patience ended.

He grabbed her wrist.

“Phone.”

She resisted.

“Please—”

Too late.

The phone fell.

Adrian picked it up.

Read the message.

His expression changed.

Then darker.

Much darker.

Clara’s voice trembled.

“What does it say?”

Adrian read aloud.

“If you want your brother alive, keep quiet.”

Silence.

Vanessa broke down.

She collapsed to the floor.

Sobbing.

Adrian stared.

Brother?

Vanessa cried hysterically.

“I’m sorry!”

Clara froze.

“What?”

Vanessa screamed through tears.

“I didn’t know about the baby!”

Adrian narrowed his eyes.

“But?”

Vanessa shook violently.

“I knew Clara was alive.”

The world stopped.

Clara stared.

Adrian’s voice became ice.

“You knew?”

Vanessa cried.

“Yes!”

Emma clung tighter to Clara.

Vanessa continued.

“Three years ago, I found out.”

Clara whispered—

“Why didn’t you tell him?”

Vanessa screamed—

“Because my father threatened to kill my brother!”

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

Vanessa sobbed.

“My younger brother isn’t dead.”

“He faked his death too.”

Clara stared.

Richard had done this before.

Vanessa continued.

“He controls everyone.”

“If we disobey…”

She trembled.

“He destroys us.”

Adrian crouched.

“Then help me.”

Vanessa looked up.

Torn.

Broken.

Adrian spoke slowly.

“Where is Richard going?”

Vanessa cried harder.

“I don’t know exactly…”

Adrian’s gaze sharpened.

“Exactly?”

Vanessa hesitated.

Clara saw it.

“You know something.”

Vanessa whispered—

“There’s a place.”

Adrian leaned closer.

“What place?”

Vanessa shook.

“No…”

Adrian’s voice lowered.

“Vanessa.”

She closed her eyes.

Then finally whispered—

“The orphanage.”

Clara froze.

“No…”

Vanessa nodded.

Adrian frowned.

“What orphanage?”

Clara’s face lost all color.

She whispered—

“Saint Mary’s.”

Adrian stared.

Clara trembled.

“No… no…”

Adrian grabbed her shoulders.

“What is it?”

Clara looked at him.

Pure horror.

“Adrian…”

Her voice cracked.

“That’s where I grew up.”

Silence.

Vanessa whispered—

“My father owns it.”

Clara stopped breathing.

Memory after memory slammed into her.

Cold hallways.

Locked doors.

Children crying.

Fear.

Pain.

Richard.

Always Richard.

Clara whispered—

“Oh my God…”

Adrian understood.

This wasn’t random.

Never random.

Richard had chosen Clara long ago.

Before Adrian ever met her.

Before love.

Before marriage.

Before everything.

Clara looked up.

Terror in her eyes.

“He planned all of this.”

Adrian’s blood ran cold.

“What do you mean?”

Clara whispered—

“He didn’t just target us…”

Her voice broke.

“He raised me.”

Adrian froze.

Clara shook uncontrollably.

“And if he took our son there…”

She burst into tears.

“He isn’t hiding him.”

Adrian’s heart dropped.

“Then what is he doing?”

Clara looked straight at him.

And spoke the words that changed everything.

“He’s training him.”

Adrian stopped breathing.

Clara whispered—

May you like

“The way he trained me.”

To be continued…
