Chapter 6: The Child No One Knew Existed

Chapter 6: The Child No One Knew Existed

The ballroom fell into a silence so complete that even the sound of the rain outside seemed deafening.

Jonathan Hayes stood frozen.

His face had gone pale.

Daniel looked from Jonathan to Vivian.

"What other child?"

Vivian merely smiled.

A slow, cruel smile.

"You'll find out."

Detective Reeves stepped forward.

"This isn't a game, Mrs. Crawford."

"If another child is in danger, tell us where."

Vivian shrugged.

"I don't have to say another word."

An officer tightened his grip on her arm.

"You'd better start talking."

She laughed quietly.

"I've waited three years."

"I can wait a few more hours."

Jonathan closed his eyes.

His breathing became uneven.

Amelia noticed immediately.

"What is she talking about?"

Jonathan hesitated.

For several long seconds, he couldn't answer.

Finally, he looked at Lily.

"There was..."

"...another little girl."

Lily frowned.

"I don't remember."

"You were too young."

Jonathan swallowed hard.

"Her name was Grace."

The room became still.

"Grace?" Daniel repeated.

Jonathan nodded.

"Grace Morgan."

"She wasn't Richard's daughter."

"She was the daughter of Richard's accountant."

Detective Bennett frowned.

"What does she have to do with this?"

Jonathan took a deep breath.

"Everything."

Three years earlier...

Richard Crawford had discovered millions of dollars disappearing from company accounts.

At first, he believed it was simple fraud.

But the deeper he investigated, the darker the truth became.

Shell companies.

Fake charities.

Forged signatures.

Money laundering.

Everything pointed toward one person.

Vivian Crawford.

Richard secretly hired forensic accountant Samuel Morgan.

Samuel uncovered enough evidence to send Vivian to prison for the rest of her life.

But before he could hand everything to federal investigators...

Samuel and his wife died in what police called a tragic house fire.

Only one person survived.

Their six-year-old daughter.

Grace.

Jonathan's voice grew heavy.

"Richard hid Grace."

"He knew she'd become the next target."

Daniel slowly pieced everything together.

"Lily inherited Richard's fortune..."

"And Grace inherited the evidence."

Jonathan nodded.

"Exactly."

Detective Reeves looked toward Vivian.

"You had two children hunted."

Vivian remained silent.

"One for money."

"One for secrets."

Still nothing.

Amelia looked down at Lily.

"Did you know Grace?"

Lily closed her eyes.

Tiny fragments of memory surfaced.

A girl with curly brown hair.

Two children coloring together.

A birthday cake.

Laughter.

Then...

A loud argument.

Someone crying.

A black SUV.

Lily suddenly grabbed Amelia's arm.

"I remember."

Everyone turned.

"There was a girl."

"We shared crayons."

"What happened?"

Lily began shaking.

"She disappeared."

"One morning..."

"...she was just gone."

The ballroom doors opened once again.

This time, a young detective hurried inside carrying a tablet.

"Sir!"

Reeves turned.

"What have you got?"

"We ran facial recognition."

"On whom?"

"The children in the files found at Vivian's estate."

"And?"

The detective looked stunned.

"Most of them weren't random."

"What do you mean?"

"They're all children connected to witnesses..."

"...employees..."

"...or business partners who disappeared after accusing Vivian of financial crimes."

The room erupted in disbelief.

Vivian hadn't simply abused children.

She had used them.

As leverage.

As threats.

As bargaining chips.

Even Detective Reeves, with twenty-five years on the force, had never seen anything so calculating.

Just then, Jonathan's phone rang.

Everyone looked at him.

The number was blocked.

He hesitated before answering.

"This is Jonathan."

A distorted voice came through the speaker.

"You shouldn't have come back."

Jonathan's expression hardened.

"Who is this?"

"You've ruined everything."

Click.

The call ended.

Within seconds, Detective Bennett grabbed the phone.

"Trace it."

The cybercrime officer connected specialized equipment.

Thirty tense seconds passed.

Finally...

"I've got a location."

"Where?"

"A warehouse."

"South Harbor Industrial District."

Jonathan's heart nearly stopped.

"I know that place."

Detective Reeves looked at him.

"How?"

Jonathan answered quietly.

"Richard owned it years ago."

"No one has used it since."

Then his eyes widened.

"Oh, no..."

"What?"

"I've been there before."

"When?"

"The night before Richard died."

"What did you see?"

Jonathan's voice dropped to almost a whisper.

"A hidden room."

Without another word, Detective Reeves began issuing orders.

"SWAT."

"Child Protective Services."

"Crime Scene."

"Medical teams."

"Move now."

Officers rushed from the ballroom.

Outside, the sound of engines filled the night.

Police SUVs.

Unmarked detective vehicles.

An armored tactical truck.

News helicopters circled overhead after hearing whispers of a major breakthrough.

Daniel turned to Amelia.

"I'm going with them."

She nodded.

"So am I."

"It's dangerous."

"I'm not letting Lily out of my sight."

Lily reached for Amelia's hand.

"I don't want you to leave."

Amelia smiled gently.

"I won't."

Forty minutes later...

A convoy of flashing blue lights pulled into the abandoned South Harbor warehouse.

The building stood alone beside the dark water.

Broken windows.

Rusted steel doors.

Overgrown weeds.

It looked deserted.

Yet every instinct told Detective Reeves otherwise.

The tactical commander whispered into his radio.

"Heat signatures."

"How many?"

A pause.

Then came the reply.

"Three adults..."

"...and one very small figure."

Jonathan closed his eyes.

"Please..."

"Let us not be too late."

The SWAT team silently surrounded the warehouse.

A heavy steel door creaked open under a hydraulic ram.

"Police!"

"Don't move!"

Flashlights cut through the darkness.

Officers swept room after room.

Dust.

Old machinery.

Empty crates.

Then...

A faint sound.

Tap.

Tap.

Tap.

Detective Bennett froze.

"Did you hear that?"

Everyone listened.

Tap.

Tap.

Tap.

The sound was coming from beneath the floor.

An officer pulled away a rotten wooden pallet.

Hidden underneath was a reinforced metal hatch secured with an electronic lock.

Jonathan stared at it in horror.

"I've seen that door before."

Detective Reeves motioned to the breaching team.

"Open it."

The lock shattered.

The hatch slowly lifted.

A rush of cold air escaped from below.

Darkness.

A narrow staircase.

And then...

A tiny voice echoed up from somewhere beneath the warehouse.

"Is..."

"...is somebody finally here?"

Every officer stopped breathing.

Jonathan's eyes filled with tears.

He recognized that voice.

May you like

After three years...

They had finally found Grace alive.
